Remember Bob Palmer

Here is another thing that used to make living in Springfield more tolerable and the News Leader fun to read. Bob Palmer's editorial cartoon poked fun at everyone from Presidents Nixon and Reagan to local politicos such as Mel Hancock and Jean Dixon. Little known fact about Palmer: He also helped the later, great Will Eisner out on the Spirit. You might not agree with everyone, but at least it wasn't Cal Thomas or letters from local idiots.

While I'm on the subject of the News Leader, it just occurred to me that the NL is now publishing the photos of LTTE writers. THAT IS REALLY DANGEROUS! Not only do psychos have the writer’s name, but they have their photo. What’s next guys? Will you print their phone number? When I wrote LTTE’s in my college days, I got threatening phone calls from people who found my name in the phone book. Why not save them the time and print the phone number under the letter? Then, print the LTTE writer’s licence plate number. That way they can chase the person down James River Freeway. There needs to be some freedom to speak out without putting your life in danger. I don’t think Gannett knows this community.
