On this, the fifth anniversary of my starting this blog, I wish to announce that I will no longer be updating this blog. I will continue to post over at my new blog, The New Adventures of Desdinova the Super Villain of the Ozarks. Please continue to follow me by clicking on the link above and choose "follow." It has gotten too time consuming to try to post material to both blog sites.

I should also let some long time readers know that I deleted quite a few post. Why?

Irrelevance. This blog originally tried to be topical. However, it was to a fault. Many of my post really didn't need to be here any more. Some of them I read and couldn't figure out who or what they were about. I had to Google the names.
Broken links. I linked to some local news websites for some of my post. Those stories or articles are gone. Many of the times I posted to material on YouTube (especially music) has been removed. So I removed those post as well.
I deleted things that might keep me from a finding a new job. I apparently stepped on a few toes of some people in the media, as well as most of the Ozarks. Anyone who knows me knows that I love the media, which is why I studied it at S.M.S.U (now M.S.U) and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in it. I felt that many of my statements about the local media were nothing more that constructive criticism. Some didn't feel that way. One company, apparently told someone I know, that I have been blacklisted from working at that company. I should point out that I was much rougher on another company and an on-air "personality" that worked there. Of course, that company took care of that problem. The criticism I gave the company that blacklisted me was mild to what I gave their rival across town. Then again, I also had some people in the company I worked for that, instead of thinking what I did was funny and laughing along, were upset about my comments about a rival company and it's on-air "personality." I knew that people in the Ozarks are touchy, but I didn't realize that people in the media were that touchy too.

However, I left quite a few things because I felt, if you were offended by what I wrote, you probably deserve it. Much of what I have posted here is satire. It was just a fun way of looking at political opinions held by many here in the Ozarks. Many of those who complained were what I called "weenie bloggers" and talk radio host. They seemed to be a humorless group of people, who made themselves miserable because their extreme beliefs. I feel that life is too short to not be able to laugh at world around us. I also found it interesting that many of these bloggers and talk radio host, who hated me so much are no longer around. That was part of the reason I decided to change the blogs direction.

I thought this blog might lead to a job as a morning show host, but apparently that wasn't going to happen. The new blog is focused on things I can write about much more easily. There will probably be less animosity and violence advocated toward me. My hope is I can develop a radio show, preferably syndicated, that will be tied into the retro theme. Contrary to what some would tell you, I believe there is a need for that type of programming in many radio markets.

I plan to leave this blog up for now. I plan to resurrect some of the post on the new blog from time to time. I hope to hear from some of you fans on the new blog.

I just wanted you readers to know that I and my "good twin brother" have exiled ourselves to the beach, as they say in the industry.

Also look for a change in this blog. We have been looking at trends in other blogs (such as Retrospace and Neato Coolville), as well as what post on this site have been most popular. We have decided that a change may take place.

There are many great blogs covering local and national news. I can't keep up, so I will be shifting my focus away from that stuff and focusing on entertainment and pop culture. Of course, when a person focuses on pop culture and entertainment, Ozarkers get upset. As you know, I LOVE TO UPSET OZARKERS!

THE REASON A NATIONAL ANTI-BULLYING LAW NEEDS REPARATIONS FOR VICTIMS

As you know from reading this blog, I believe we need a national law to deal with the bullying problem. In November, I wrote a post about how I feel that there needs to be a strict federal anti-bullying law. This law should also require the bully and his/her family to pay reparations to the victim.

Some people would say, "Desdinova, why would you believe such a thing is necessary?" My reason has a name: Donny Dickweed (pictured above).

Donny was both a jock and a preppy. His grandfather was the president of the local bank and his family owned a company that made recliners and mattresses. Donny picked on both me and my "good twin brother." As a matter of fact, Donny Dickweed is one of the models for the bad guy, Johnny Waldorf, in my "good twin brother's" novel, Real George.

What is Donny Dickweed doing today? I saw his profile on Facebook and he lives in a large beach house in Florida with a hot wife. He is in real estate and is (of course) a Republican. Meanwhile, I live in a small apartment and make minimum wage, even though I have two college degrees and work in the mass media.

I feel every time somebody buys a recline or mattress, I and my "good twin brother" should get at least 75-percent of the profit to make up for all the "heart-checks," "pink bellies" and "Does-this-hurt?" sessions we were forced to endure from this guy. I also want to note that he didn't just pick on me and my "good twin brother" but other students both male and female. I once saw him choke a female student until she nearly passed out. He also called Eunice Moneymaker "zit face" until she cried.

There were very few teachers and administrators who would stand up to this jerk, because his family were very prominant in the community. His grandfather has a monument to dedicated to him or something like that. Donny was allowed to get away with this sort of behavior because of his family's money and power.

If you are wondering, neither I nor my "good twin brother" are friends with Donny Dickweed on Facebook. Eunice Moneymaker is but, as I have pointed out before, Eunice didn't have good taste in men or she would have went steady with me.

The fact is one never forgets the scars left by a bully, however if the bully and his family had to pony up some dough to the victim (75 percent of every recliner and mattress sold), the pain might hurt less.

Joel Frank, writing in the Charleston City Paper, has scribed a very good article on the current state of the radio industry. His suggestions at the end are what I having been trying to say on this blog since it began in 2007.

Naturally, some radio/DJ haters have to post comments on the article. I really believe people who hate DJ's should be taken out and shot, then their guts should be cut out and fed to dogs.

ANOTHER LAME APRIL FOOL'S PRANK FROM YOUR'S TRULY

If you are on Ebay, going to flea markets and yard sales or looking through your old records in the basement for a copy of the record "A Coach's Speech to His Son," you need to stop. Why? IT DOES NOT EXIST. It was another in a long line of April Fool's Day pranks that haven't worked very well. I assume it is because I am rarely serious. The only April Fool's Day prank that even came close to working was my arrest by Lebanon Police for making fun of then-mayor, Bud Allen. Busplunge did like the takeover of this blog by the GOP Grandma (yes, that picture is of a tranny not granny). I only recently noticed lost Googlers landing on this April Fool's Day post from last year announcing the Desdinova cartoon by Disney.

Yes, I will admit that even the original post about the e-mail of "A Coach's Speech To His Son" was a fabrication. As a matter of fact, I had my "twin brother" Jeff record the recitation last year (that is his great booming voice) for April Fool's Day, but we couldn't find a good instrumental rendition of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" to use in the background. So I went with the Disney cartoon post. I also had a problem with the posting of this on You Tube. The sound quality was bad because of the limitations of file size. It sounds great at home. If I can find a way to repost it in a better quality, I will.

For those of you who figured this out, it was intended as a parody of several "spoken word" recitation records of the past. You may have recognized parts of records by Baz Luhrmann, Byron MacGregor, Arthur Godfrey, Art Linkletter, Paul Harvey, Red Skelton, John Wayne and Tex Ritter (TEX RITTER???).

My main target in this parody was a person name Victor Lundberg and his 1967 record "An Open Letter To My Teenage Son." It was this record which ends with him telling his son that if he burned his draft card he should "burn (his) birth certificate at the same time. From that moment on, I have no son." Apparently, Lundberg was not exactly the perfect father or person for that matter. On a blog called Unpleasant!, his daughter, Terri, tells us some rather ugly details about dear old Dad. "As one of Victor’s 5 abandoned children from two families let me share with you that he clearly understood the power of his voice and the spoken word. He used this highly crafted trademark all of his life to his great benefit. Perhaps fortunately so, this is how he shall be remembered by the public. However, the public honors a fake,a puppet master extraordinaire. In truth, his personality bordered on or perhaps was sociopathic. He was estranged from all of his children and never provided financial or emotional support to any of them. He seemed incapable of making human connections but knew well how to benefit from them. He thought little of coming to his estranged children for money. We were probably all asked for cash with never a consideration of repayment. At his death he owed many. His true legacy is a son, Victor Jr., dead at the age of 34 from a lifestyle gifted to him by his father…a lifestyle of philandering, drug abuse and a pathology that made him dangerous to others. Another son remains lost to a world of drug abuse. His remaining son and daughters, while also emotionally affected by this man, did not succomb to his genetic or behavioral predispositions. He used people and he used them completely. He died a drunken man on state aid in Michigan alone in a run down apartment. How do you imagine good people end up like this in life? They do not! Find someone deserving of your memorial. You honor a creation, a carefully constructed image. The man behind the image was an empty soul devoid of love and caring. He seized every platform that might make him money. From those that knew him he is paid no honor."

WOW! Talking about a story behind the hit record. I guess I should have went with my other ideas of telling people I had died or that I was taking a job as Billy Long's speech writer.

PEOPLE ARE PAYING $1,000,000 ON EBAY FOR THIS RECORD

In a post last January, I mentioned that someone on Facebook sent me this goofy speech by a coach to his son.

Turns out that the coach who wrote that also recorded that on a 45 back in the early 80s. His name was Norman Laymcok and he coached at Leland High School in Leland, Indiana.

Someone posted a copy of this on YouTube. According to this person, this 45 is now bringing $1,000,000 on Ebay. WHY??? This sucks (and not because of the poor quality of the audio on this video).

If you haven't heard yet, Charlie Sheen has been fired from "Two and a Half Men." All Access reported this, since Charlie Sheen has weaseled his way on to morning radio shows in a way that would make Billy Long proud.

The question is "WHO WILL REPLACE CHARLIE SHEEN ON TWO AND A HALF MEN?" and "WHY IS DESDINOVA USING ALL CAPS FOR THIS?"

Here is my guess. Charlie Sheen will either be replaced by

John McIntire or

Ted McGinley.

That is usually who replaces people on TV shows.

I DON'T LIKE GUYS WHO WEAR SUITS

I don't like guys who wear suits. They are usually preppy douche bags, who have a fetish-like obsession with money.

Case in point: two guys who I had to deal with at work today. They were Republicans (naturally) and they were wearing matching suits. I just kept think to myself, "What did these two dimwits do to screw up their lives to make themselves so uncool?" and also "Why is everyone here at work acting like these guys are cooler than me? These guys are dorks who wear suits!!!" The sad part is these geeks make more money than me.

Many of my favorite film scores were composed by John Barry. Barry is best know for his work on the James Bond films. One of his first film scores was for a 50's juvenile delinquent film Beat Girl. That song, featuring the twangy guitar of Vic Flick, was recycled by Fatboy Slim into the 90's hit song "Rockefeller Skank."

One of my favorite comedy LPs of all time is I AM THE PRESIDENT by David Frye. One of the tracks features President-elect Richard Nixon taking a tour of the White House at 2 a.m. from lame duck President Lyndon Johnson. My favorite line is President Johnson yelling to his wife, "Company is coming up, Lady Bird! Beautify yer self!"

In a skit on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour entitled "A Fairy Tale for Our Times," Frye played Presidents Johnson and Nixon, as well as Sen. Hubert Humphrey and Gov. George Wallace.

CLYDE CLIFFORD'S BEAKER STREET TO LEAVE THE AIRWAVES

Clyde Clifford and Beaker Street are not just Arkansas radio legends, but legends in the Midwest and Southern part of the United States. Sadly, Clyde Clifford has been told by the management of KKPT that his last show will be on Feb. 6, 2011.

Beaker Street was one of the many radio shows that inspired me to get into radio. I used it as a model for my "Psychedelic Limits" segment of the Midnite Snack on KSMU in the late 80s.

Unfortunately, radio does no longer understands the value programs like Beaker Street and Clyde Clifford. Most people in radio management these days prefer talk shows hosted by sleazy financial advisers and right-wing, conservative, hate mongers or infomercials dangerous weight loss supplements and "auctions' for stuff that used to be given away as prizes to "the fifth caller."

Of course, opinions, like this one, is why I'm considered the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

There was a time when I featured several famous twins in the news. Among these twins were Kenny Hulshof and Robert McNamara, Missouri Public Service Commission's Jeff Davis and Our Gang's Norman "Chubby" Chaney, Sen. Mike Gibbons and Peter Boyle in Young Frankenstein, and, of course, Sarah Palin and a typical adult film archetype.

Now, a new set of twins have come our way. Tucson shooter Jared L. Loughner and Fox News/talk radio host Glenn Beck. Scary, huh!

ARE THERE MORE RADIO PEOPLE LIKE TED WILLIAMS OUT THERE?

The media last week was a buzz with a great human interest story. Ted Williams, a homeless former radio announcer, was panhandling for dollars at an intersection. For a dollar, Williams would "announce" for people. By his own admission, he had screwed up his career with drugs and alcohol. Many outside the industry are delighting in this story.

Of course, there are radio people whining and griping about this. They are either saying, "What about the other talented out-of-work radio people?" or "What about the talented people working in radio who need a better job?" My question is "How many of you would have offered a talented out-of-work radio person a job lately?" and "How many job openings have your radio station or radio cluster advertised lately?"

I see quite a few people mentioning the fact that Williams (by his own admission) was abusing alcohol and drugs. The truth is a person working in the radio industry doesn't have to be addicted to drugs and alcohol to wind up penniless and destitute. MOST OF THE PEOPLE CURRENTLY EMPLOYED IN RADIO ARE PENNILESS AND DESTITUTE.

Over the sixteen years I have been in commercial radio, I have seen several co-workers have to take government assistance just to put food on the table for their families. There are even radio stations locally which are notorious for not paying their on-air talent. Many on-air radio personalities are only paid minimum wage. Many radio stations do not provide health insurance for their employees. Even before consolidation, these conditions existed.

I've seen people lose their jobs because of illness or injury. I've even seen hours cut as a personal vendetta by managment or because a format consultant or advertiser doesn't like them.

However, the jobless rate among well-trained radio professionals have increased because of consolidation. Many of the large radio companies cut staff and eliminate positions, while increasing the salaries of their CEOs. These companies love to replace local talent with Ryan Seacrest or John Tesh.

Another thing that creates situations like the Ted Williams case would be non-compete clauses. I feel these should be outlawed. They do more harm than good. They basically punish on-air talent for trying to further their career. Some non-competes clauses keep people from working for up to a year.

I also know that many radio on-air positions are never advertised. This is a violation of the Equal Employment Opportunity laws. Radio stations and companies find ways of getting around this, usually they hire an old friend or the child of an advertiser.

I've said it before and will say it again (even though it is not very popular). the radio industry needs to be reformed and investigated very closely. Maybe Ted Williams' plight will bring awareness to the problems of on-air radio people. The radio companies and owners don't need a bailout, but their employees do. Ted Williams may have gotten his.

Last year was not a good year for me. It started in January, when I fell on the ice late one night after I got off of work. There had been a snow earlier in the week and the sun had melted some of the white stuff. Of course, by the time I got off work, the temperature has dropped quite a bit causing the melted snow to refreeze on the sidewalks around my apartment. When I got out of my vehicle that night, I started to step over the piled up snow along the sidewalk with my right foot and leg. At that point, my left foot slipped on the ice. I feel backwards on to my left foot with my left leg being bent back behind me. The right leg was still extended.

Looking back, I should have went to the emergency room as soon as I got off the cold, frozen ground. Not that getting off the ground was that easy, because I fell several times getting up. I had to work the next day with a sore ankle and, what I assume, was a groin pull. Because of my work schedule, I had to wait a week to see a doctor.

The doctor, who I had been seeing for several years, would not take X-rays. He told me that my ankle was still sore from that fall on the ice because I was "overweight." He said I needed to exercise more. So I did, which caused the ankle to swell up like a grapefruit. I continued to ask this doctor yo X-ray my ankle and every time I got the same lecture about how I needed to "exercise more and watch my weight."

In August, I decided to change to a different doctor. This doctor took an X-ray immediately. He came back in and pointed to a dark area just above my ankle bone on the X-ray. He then sent me to an orthopedist, who ran an MRI. That showed that I had a bruised bane and torn tendon. So for the past few months, I have wore a cam-boot on my left foot and walked with a walker.

Add to all this two bouts with bronchitis, kidney stones, a spider bite, a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes and a tooth I chipped while grinding my teeth producing a talk show with a screaming, racist, sexist, right-wing nitwit. Busplunge knows who I'm talking about. Producing a show with this individual also cause severe headaches.

While suffering all these various health problems, I had to listen to another former co-worker badmouth the President's health care plan. Maybe he should pay for my medical bills from the past year, as well as the bill for the surgery I may possibly need on my ankle. He could use his poker money or the money he spends those cowboy hats that make him look like Hoss Cartwright's illegitimate son. I'm sure he will whine to some of my superiors about this. I understand he is fed up with me making fun of him.

All of this pain and running to the doctor has caused me to have to put this blog on the back burner.

I've found two more You Tube Christmas presents for you. The first one I found by accident, but I thought I should post it because it fits me to a T. It is a 1932 Van Buren Studios cartoon entitled "The Snow Man." Most Van Buren cartoons are not very good. I'm going to be honest, I think most Van Buren Studios cartoons suck. They usually feature goofy looking animals "frolicking" and talking in silly, squeeking voices.

This cartoon is different. It cashes in on the hot Hollywood trend of the early 30s - horror films. This features a evil snowman who wrecks havoc and has a laugh like this, "Mwu-HAHAHAHAHA!" See why I like it. This is the unedited version.

Two versions of the same always pertinent message. Both of these are from MGM. One is a 1939Hugh Harman cartoon called "Peace On Earth." Old Grandpa Squirrel explains the irony or the popular Christmas expression "Peace on Earth, good will toward men." This was nominated for an Oscar.

In 1955, MGM's animation team of Hanna and Barbera updated the same story as "Good Will Toward Men." This was also nominated for an Oscar.

Last Christmas, I was watching on a disc from one of those DVD box sets made by the Mill Creek Company. I found one called "Christmas Cartoons and Shorts." It had several Christmas cartoons from the 30s & 40s on it, but also several short subjects from Castle Films. Castle made films for home projectors and schools. Some of the Christmas short films had me saying "WTF?!?!?!?" Here are two of those.

SANTA CLAUS, PUNCH & JUDY: Santa indulges a group of little Baby Boomers with the puppet equivalent of extreme fighting. This may not be safe at work since one scene involves a puppet spanking his monkey (with a large stick).

SANTA IN ANIMAL LAND: This one would be best viewed aided by alcohol and drugs. It might make it more logical.

No animal puppets were harmed during the filming of this movie. However, watching it could lead to brain damage. This explains why many Baby Boomers tried drugs.

What I find ludicrous about their ads is the claims that they can text you when "the kids get home from school." They also will "notify you" if someone "opens your liquor cabinet." ATLANTA RADIO STATION HOST TOWNHALL MEETING TO STOP BULLYING

An Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9 stopped music Monday for a townhall forum on bullying. Usually, I'm against stopping music for election, sports or severe weather coverage. I believe updates and break-ins are more effective and don't upset as many music listeners. However, the bullying crisis in this country needs to be addressed. I've noticed that All Access has reported several CHR and urban stations are having these townhall forums on bullying.

I also notice that the talk radio industry in NOT talking about bullying. The reason is they are PRO-BULLYING. If you knew the truth, most talk radio host were probably bullies when they were in school. I'm sure that Dr. Laura called some girl in her class a "Skanky Lezzy" and no doubt Rush Limbaugh sat on some kid who was smaller than him. As much talk as there has been about anti-bullying laws, I'm sure it is only a matter of time before Mike Savage screams, "I hope all the little whiny bullying victims die of cancer!" and Glenn Beck will say, "I can't prove this but Adolph Hitler was against bullying and enacted an anti-bullying law. Good American children should not be punished for bullying the wimpy socialist classmates." (He'll turn on his fake tears at that point)

A commenter on the story from WGCL-TV about the Hot 107.9 anti-bullying townhall mentioned something that might also explain why the right-wing isn't interested in stopping bullying. The rise in bullying is a result of No Child Left Behind, which was designed to penalize, and ultimately, destroy the public school system. School suspensions rack up negative points on the Annual Yearly Progress Process. Schools sweep problems under the rug to avoid being penalized. Also many teachers complain that problem students, that used to be in special programs designed to deal with them, are merged into the classrooms with good students. These students are a constant problem for teachers that are trying to teach kids.

I know many public school teachers and they all agree that No Child Left Behind is one of the worst things to ever happened to public schools. It needs to be rescinded.

Last night, KYTV's Mike Landis had an excellent report on bullying last night (11-11-2010). The horror stories of 9-year old Grace Powell and Drury University student Zach Landry struck home with me. I identified with much of the fear and terror, as well as the frustration with adults not taking things seriously.

I (and "my twin brother") were both tormented by the same bully in school. This kid was not the stereotype some have of a bully. He was not the "kid from the wrong side of the tracks" with long hair and heavy metal band T-shirt.

This guy was from a wealthy and high influential family. "My twin brother" and I were not the only students this guy tormented, but the school did very little to punish him. This guy sat next to me in a class and he constantly punch me in the arm. He also alternated with flip me in the back of the ears with his fingers. He also would repeatedly call me names like "homo," "fag" and "queer" even though I was madly in love with Eunice Moneymaker (That is as heterosexual as you can get with out being Chuck Norris).

My parents complained to the school after I (and "my twin brother") began having horrible nightmares in which this preppy guy killed everyone that "we" were was close to. The image that sticks out the most from those nightmares were that they ended with this preppy guy shoving Eunice Moneymaker down a stairwell in the Rainey Building at Lebanon Junior High. He would hold me back so I couldn't help her. As I was looking down the stairs at her bloody and broken body, he would smile and hiss like a snake in his raspy voice, "You can't have her now. She is dead."

All the school did was give the kid a reprimand. Looking back this preppy guy should have been removed from school back in junior high. I remember that during senior year this same guy began choking a girl. Luckily, the principal walked in and stopped him. The girl was turning blue. This kid claimed he was "just joking." Some joke.

I and "my twin brother" was told by that we "brought this on ourselves." We were told we needed to be "nicer" to this guy (The adult authority figure who told me and "my twin brother" is now a principal at one the Springfield middle schools). Another teacher told me that this would all stop if "I let the Lord into my life." No adult was taking "our" problem with this bully seriously.

I should note that there were teachers who complained about this guy bullying students in their classrooms, but nothing was done. Best I can remember, his grandfather may have been on the Lebanon R-3 school board. I'm not sure about this, but I know his grandfather had plenty of money to throw around.

What happened to this preppy guy? I understand that this guy ran his father's business just long enough to cut wages, fire people close to retirement and take away the employee's health insurance. What a nice guy!

He currently lives off a trust fund (and Dubya's tax cuts) in a big house by the beach in Bocca Ranton, Florida with his ump-teenth trophy wife. Meanwhile, I live in my secret hideout beneath Park Central Square and "my twin brother" lives in a one bedroom apartment at a place that Uli Gulje of Half Past Awesome fame refers to as "the Home for Wayward Firefighters."

I'm glad to see Springfield State Rep. Sarah Lampe is championing this cause. I like that she believes that the personal traits, that bullies frequently attack their victims over, should be spelled out for special protection. I also like that it doesn't allow individual districts to weasel out of protecting victims of bullying. However, we need more.

I feel there needs to be a national anti-bullying law, similar to the law that State Rep. Lampe is sponsoring, but with the bully's family paying reparations to the victims.

I noticed that several of the comments under Mike Landis's story mentioned that any law should hold the bully's parents responsible. That is also how I feel. Parents teach their children to hate other children or at least feel superior to others, so they should have to pay the price. I feel the parents should have to pay their little darling bully's victim twenty-five percent of their income from their business or wages. Once the bully is out on his own and making a living, he or she will have to give their victim twenty-five percent of their earnings or it should be taken from the parent's retirement fund. The law must designed so that the bully cannot get away from paying the reparations by declaring bankruptcy. Let's face it, the families of bullies should be financially ruined the way they ruin the lives of their victims.

I feel that President Obama needs to take up the issue of bullying. If I was the President would find a way to enact this into federal law with out running it by the congress or Senate. If a state objects to this law, then we should take away any federal dollars from that state. As we have seen, state and local governments cannot be trusted on this issue.

I also think a federal anti-bullying law should be called "Phoebe's Law," in memory of Phoebe Prince.

I can't believe this guy won CMA Male Vocalist of the Year. I never heard any of this guy's music until Tuesday night when I caught his performance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. The only reason I saw that was because I was preparing to watch a DVD (KSPR and my DVD player are both on channel 4). As you readers know, I've been a hardcore David Letterman watcher since junior high.

This Blake Shelton guy screamed some horrible song called "Kiss My Redneck @$$" or something like that. It was one of those songs that the guys that beat me up in junior high would have liked. This kind of music spawns bullies. Sounded like it was written by that doofus that writes that Patriot's Pen column in the News Leader. I CAN'T BELIEVE ANYONE SANE PERSON WOULD LISTEN TO THAT!!! IT IS ALMOST AS BAD AS THAT CHICKEN FRIED SONG!!!

I notice that Shelton is from Ada, Oklahoma and the Oklahoman is promoting his appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. If I was on Kimmel, Conan, or Letterman, The Lebanon Daily Record wouldn't even mention it. Instead they would run a front page story about a housewife who was in Vicki Hartzler's cooking class or a guy who dated Billy Long's sister.

A MEDICAL QUESTION

2010 has been a bad year for me. I tore a tendon in my leg during a fall on the ice in January. This went undetected thanks to my former doctor, who said the pain in my ankle was caused by "my excessive weight." (Notice I said he was my former doctor) I've also had bronchitis, kidney stones, a spider bite and was diagnosed as being a type 2 diabetic.

I have a question for doctors and patients alike. It is allegorical to the current state of radio industry and American politics. I thought of this while read several disheartening news stories on All Access today. This also has local ramifications.

If you were in charge of a hospital, who would you hire to take care of patients and perform surgery? Would you hire experienced specialist and surgeons? Would you hire young specialist and surgeons just out of medical school? Or would you place your patients in the care of people who are not educated in medicine, but other fields? These people would be plumbers, stock brokers, mortgage lenders, bankers, real estate agents and auctioneers. They would pay you to allow them to operate on patients (It would be an ego thing).

Would you also support one of these stock brokers, mortgage lenders, bankers, real estate agents or auctioneers if they want to be president of the American Medical Association, even though they don't know anything about medical science? They would be "outsiders" from the medical profession, but they are "business men."

After all, a plumber, stock broker, mortgage lender, banker, real estate agent or auctioneer may not have went to medical school, but they are "business men." They could probably do just as good operating on your prostrate or your brain tumor as someone who went to some big medical school in a big city somewhere. We all know that "business men" are so much smarter than teachers, firemen, policemen, judges, psychiatrist, social workers and media people, so they probably know more than some person who spent about ten years in college studying to be a doctor. Are you going to let them operate on you?

They'll probably cut your throat and let you bleed to death. That is what most "business men" do to us and our country anyway.

Like many men all over the world, I don't understand women. As many of you readers know, I had my heart broken in junior high by a girl name Eunice Moneymaker (pictured above). This tragedy put me on the road to being the Super-Villain of the Ozarks.

I was looking at the photo that Busplunge has been posting on his blog (Does Busplunge have one of those "nasty blogs" that the News Leader was talking about?) of a young Billy Long on a horse with a pistol and dog by his side (above). A horrible and ghastly thought crossed my mind as I looked at this photo. If Billy Long had attended Lebanon Junior High at the same time as Eunice Moneymaker and myself, EUNICE WOULD HAVE LIKED BILLY LONG OVER ME!

He just looks like the kind of guy that Eunice and her friends (Hallie Burton and Keller Williams) would have gushed over and patted on, while turning up their noses at me. He would have called me names, depants me in gym, flicked my ears with a pencil in class, shot pennies and paper clips at me with a rubber band. Eunice and her friends would have thought that was funny. Billy probably listened to country music too.

As you can see from the Xmas photo, I'm much more cuter than Billy Long was at that age. Oh well. Some people have no taste in the kind of people they like.

RADIO STILL POPULAR WITH SoCAL KIDS

All Access-dot-com has a report from the Southern California Broadcasters Association that shows that radio is still popular among listeners from 12 to 34.

"SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION Pres. MARY BETH GARBER loves to share positive stories that radio can give to their sales staffs and take to the street. The latest "good news" are findings that the 12-34 demographic is still listening to radio -- in large numbers.

Said GARBER, "In light of all the chatter about how and whether or not young people use radio TODAY, we asked BILL ROSE of ARBITRON for an analysis of 12-34 persons' radio listening in the 10 PPM markets that have been in existence since SEPT. 2008. He tracked changes in % listening and for how long they listened. His findings are based on nearly 5,000 persons 12-34 from just these 10 markets and come from passive measure PORTABLE PEOPLE METERS rather than questions about people's perception of their media usage habits."

His findings? "Radio listening among young people age 12-34 has remained steady in the 10 PPM markets that have been currency during the past three years. An analysis of these 10 PPM markets reveals that the percentage of people age 12-34 who have tuned for five or more minutes during the week (weekly cume rating) has actually grown from an average of 93.0% in SEPTEMBER 2008 to 94.9% in SEPTEMBER 2010. In addition, Radio Time Spent Listening has been stable at 10:09 per week in SEPTEMBER 2010 up slightly from 10:04 in SEPTEMBER 2008. The stability of Radio listening is evidence of the medium's continued importance among young people and is especially noteworthy considering the highly publicized growth of smart phone usage, social networking and pureplay Internet radio during this span of time."

"The ARBITRON data is based on what 5,000 people in 10 markets actually did, vs. typically what 1,500 people nationwide say they did," points out GARBER. "Building a communications plan using only perception-based data is like building on sand. That's why the advertising business demanded passive electronic measurement of TV and Radio. ARBITRON's passive measurement data clearly shows that radio is as vital now as it was in 2008 in the lives of 12-34 year olds."

FORMER LOCAL RADIO PERSONALITY ADAM WEST PASSES AWAY AT 44

On the local radio airwaves, he went by Adam West. He was heard on "The Bear" and "The Planet," as well as KKLH and ROCK 99, KWTO-FM. Sadly, Adam, whose real name was Jeff Birkenfeld, passed away over the weekend at 44.

TROUBLE AT PARENTS TELEVISION COUNCIL

An article in the New York Times says that the Parents Television Council is dysfunctional and its power is dwindling. It may have to do with some of the obvious hypocrisy in their attacks and the conflict of interest with sister foundation Media Research Council.

I am still proud of myself for refusing to read a Parents Television Council news release as a legitimate news story while working at a radio station in Lebanon, MO. The boss (referred to by some as the Great White Buffalo and Stay Puff Marshmallow Man) didn't like it, but I have my ethics. I really feel broadcasters should not give this group airtime, since they are attacking and trying to control what broadcasters do.

Of course, an opinion, like that one, is why I'm considered the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

LOCAL AUTHOR HOPES HIS BOOK GETS BANNED

In the past few weeks, the subject of banning books in the public schools has reared its ugly head in the Ozarks. Of all the things said in this discussion, I found the comments of a Republic parent Wesley Scroggins ridiculous and asinine. My twin brother, Jeffrey, has been writing a satirical young adult's novel in his spare time since 2000.

The title of his novel is Real George. The story revolves around a terminally ill boy name George Marter, growing up in a small Missouri town in the 1950's. George is bullied by the son of the town banker, who eventually ascends to mayor of the town. The bullying is allowed to go on for years until George kills his tormentor in self defense. George is then put on trial, where the prosecutor (and uncle of the victim) try to paint George as "an agent of Godless Communism out to destroy America."

I though it would be interesting if I was to sit down with Jeffrey and find out what he thought about this controversy.

Desdinova: Would Wesley Scoggins approve of your book?

Jeffrey: No. First off, one of my major influences is Kurt Vonnegut. I can't believe MSU hired a teacher that doesn't like Vonnegut. People like that shouldn't be teaching. I noticed that he said his opposition to the book Speak is that the adults were portrayed at stupid. I hate to inform this Scroggins guy but most of the adults I came in contact during my childhood and teen years were stupid. I was bullied like George and I received very little help in dealing with this bully. He family owned a manufacturing company in Lebanon, so the adults allowed this kid to get away with abusing me and several other kids.

Desdinova: What about sex?

Jeffrey: Nothing too extreme, but I don't think Scroggins would approve. George gets erections around girls, which embarrass him. There isn't a rape, but I address physical abuse among teens who are dating. The main antagonist, Johnny Waldorf, abuses his girlfriend, who George is in love with.

The adults turn a blind eye to what Johnny does. He murders a closeted gay classmate at a party where there is an excessive amount of drinking. The liquor is provided for the kids by the parents hosting the party. He was planning to kill George, so Johnny kills a boy that is in love with him. It is covered up as an accident. I also create the paradox that this boy, Tucker Hannity, is obviously gay to modern readers, yet the adults and kids in the town accuse George of being gay using strange criteria such as the fact that he suffers from multiple health problems.

Johnny also impregnates a girl, whose father works for his father. The girl has to leave town. Later, Johnny murders another girl but his father has it hushed up.

Desdinova: There seems to be a theme of hypocrisy in this novel. Am I write?

Jeffrey: Absolutely! You and I both hate hypocrisy. I'm also looking a how adults attack anything popular with young people, such as entertainment or style of dress, as a threat, yet there are some behaviors that are very destructive such a physical violence.

George is George. He wants to be James Dean, but other than that he is the same inside and out. He is very smart. He frequently questions the adults and points out their mistakes, which is one reason they don't like him.

Johnny is a phony, who hides his lack of morals behind religion and patriotism. He acts the way the adults tell him to. He seeks the favor of older people, where George wants to be accepted on his own terms. Johnny has also been taught by his father to take what he wants. Johnny's father is as much a bully as his. I believe that most bullies have been taught to be bullies by their parents. His father is afraid that George might get more attention than Johnny because of his illness. Also childhood illness was, along with homosexuality and civil rights, something to be feared in the McCarthy era.

Desdinova: That brings me to another question. Why does this take place in the Fifties?

Jeffrey: That decade has a certain mystique to older, conservatives people. They keep saying we need to go back to that time. When you hear why they want to go back to that time it is not only for the wrong reasons, but also much of what they remember is wrong. Especially on the idea of "family friendly" entertainment. They believe that there wasn't any sex in the entertainment world at the time. So how do they explain that iconic image from Seven Year Itch of Marilyn Monroe's dress being blown upward? They also need to explain Clint Walker walking around shirtless on Cheyenne.

You also hear people complain about things like Twilight and First Blood, but the Fifties had the horror comics and also the horror movies shows with a host dispensing ghoulish jokes.

The early rock and roll had more subtle sex in it than people remember. Those songs have largely been ignored by oldies radio. They were more influential over rock and roll than what gets played on the radio. "Annie Had a Baby" by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters is the big one I mention quite a bit.

Also the McCarthy era propaganda was filled with hate and paranoia. It was the forerunner of the stuff you hear on talk radio and Fox News. The townspeople begin to fear George. There was quite a bit of hate aimed at what we now call "special needs" children. The belief was that caring for "weak and sickly" children could hinder America if the Russians invaded. There was a book, published in northern Missouri, that suggested that we should euthanize children with asthma, diabetes and handicaps. And people say the Fifties was a great decade!

The focus on the pop culture in George's life was inspired by the controversy surrounding pop culture in young people's lives in the wake of the Columbine massacre. I thought the whole discussion was silly. People should have been looking at bullying rather than what music or clothes a person wears. Now, bullying is at an epidemic level in this country. I blame it on the toxic environment created by talk radio, Fox News and some of the reality TV shows. The government is going to have to step in and make laws protecting the victim's of bullying and punish the bullies and their parents. The bad part the conservatives are always against it. Probably because they, like Johnny Waldorf's dad, raise their kids to be bullies.

Desdinova: So, in closing, do you think your book will be challenged in Ozarks schools?

Jeffrey: I hope so! First it has to be published.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I USED TO LIKE THAT SONG

Did you ever stop liking something that you thought was "cool" when you were younger? Recently, I discovered that I no longer liked a song from my youth called "88 Lines About 44 Women." The song was by a group called the Nails. It kept coming up in my Ipod and Itunes. I had transferred it from a CD of 80's hits, so it wasn't like I had paid to download it.

You see when I was in junior high this song would occasionally be heard on the radio. If it was heard it was after 10 p.m at night. The reason was it had "dirty words" in it. I don't think I ever heard a "censored" version of this song. Somebody in Hammons Hall had it on a tape or record, because you could hear it playing down the hall. I didn't hear it again until I bought this 80's hits CD.

As it began playing on my Ipod and Itunes in shuffle mode, I noticed something. "88 Lines About 44 Women" is a really lame song. It is only about five minutes long, but it seems to go on for an eternity. The singer reads the lyrics like an NPR radio host, while the music sounds like it was played on a children's keyboard. The lyrics are simple yet so random. I could write new lyrics to this song and nobody would know the difference. All I need was to do would be come up with (1) two women's names - one exotic and one common, (2) an action that is very normal or sweet and tender (3) an action that is both disturbing and repulsive about either religion, drugs, sex or bodily functions and (4) throw in a four letter word. It would go something like this:

"Vanda was a fat girl, but she knew how to dance. Melinda was a sexy blond with a bad habit of $#!++ing her pants. Hhhuuummmm-hum-hum-hum-hum-HUM-hum-hum"

At the end of each verse, the lead vocalist/narrator would hum (Yes, I said hum) along with the music. To make things worse, there was another song about that time that sounded like it was being played on a child's keyboard that consisted mainly of the words "Da da da" repeated over and over.

If you MUST hear this song, you can find a homemade video of the song on You Tube. It probably isn't safe for work because it is not PC, not family friendly and down right annoying.

I complain about the radio industry, which I am appear of. People have said, "If you don't like it, why did you take a job in the radio industry?"

As many of you know, the radio industry crossed over to the DARK SIDE!

I found this video of a hit song from 1974 that celebrates the reason I got into radio. There is no talk about President Obama's birth certificate, immigration, "Fair Tax," socialism, Reagan fetishism or "the defending the Constitution." Just the important stuff.

NEWSPAPER DEMOTED EDITOR FOR OFFENDING BUSINESS MEN

This sounds like the kind of garbage that goes on here in the Ozarks. The Miami Herald has this disgusting story of Autumn Drussell (pictured above). She was the editor of the Stoughton Courier Hub, until she wrote an editorial about how she was shopping at big box chain stores because they had lower prices. She suggested that local business owners improve customer service and "stop bad mouthing their areas."

That caused a doofus with a hardware store to write a snide and threatening letter to the editor about Drussell. In the letter, he also said he wouldn't advertise with the newspaper again. She was demoted by the management of the newspapers owners, Unified Newspaper Group, which is a division of Woodward Communications Inc.

I have seen this too much in my years with various local media groups. Probably, the salesmen started wetting their panties and crying that the local business owners, who are probably arrogant jerks, will drop advertising. They (sales people) go to management and ask for Drussell to be punished or fired. Management, being both greedy and gutless, demote Drussell for writing an honest opinion piece.

This story sounds like a Sinclair Lewis novel.

Now, if this was the Ozarks, the newspaper would then replace the educated and experienced journalist (Drussell) with either a Republican party operative or an Republican business man, like an auctioneer, who have no experience or education in journalism or media. Or worse, a sales person talks management into letting his redneck brother-in-law write editorials. Sadly, this is the is the mentality of the local media.

WAR OF THE WEENIE BLOGGERS

Trouble is brewing in the land of the local weenie blogs. First, I should say that the weenie blogs are dropping like flies. I checked several old links and many of these weenie blogs are no longer in existence or haven't updated since 2009. They have went the way of their hero, Vincent David Jericho.

On the other hand, there is trouble brewing between two local weenie bloggers. At first I thought trouble was over the website created by "free weenie" blogger Bungalow Bill. It is called Longiswrong. It has become a favorite of Busplunge. It has taken Billy Long to task over several statements made to the press and show that Billy Long isn't a "true conservative." Another conservative blogger and former Nixa alderman, who must be supporting Billy Long, set up a website called "Bungalow Bill Is Wrong." According to Bungalow Bill, this started after he criticized the Nixa police for frisking a teenage girl at the Taco Bell just for fun.

In true Ozarks conservative fashion, the Nixa alderman criticizes the people and groups Bungalow Bills "friended" or "joined" on Facebook. The Nixa alderman feels it is wrong to belong to any group that includes lesbians, fans on Hunter S. Thompson and "bloggers who have had a history of attacking conservatives active in the movement of protecting our liberties." That statement is linked to MY BLOG. Weenie bloggers are not known for their sense of humor. They take themselves too serious. They believe they are trying to save the country from evil forces - like me. Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

First of all, I don't "attack" anyone who is "protecting our liberties." I make fun of pompous, un-hip jerks, who make fools of themselves on radio and TV. There is a big difference.

I don't really know Bungalow Bill, he just joined the Facebook fan group in an effort to contact me about Billy Long. I told him I knew very little and he never tried to contact me again.

However, I will give Bungalow Bill credit, he doesn't make snide remarks about any of the post I promote on my Facebook page, even though I'm sure he doesn't agree with anything I say. Maybe he is one of the few conservatives who "gits" what I do on this blog, rather than get their panties in a wad.

Why do the conservative bloggers never show up at the Springfield Bloggers Association meet-ups. Is it because we have a rule about "outing" anonymous bloggers? Nothing would make them feel like a "big boy patriotic hero" like "exposing the true identity of the evil blogger Desdinova." They all like to post their names on their blogs. That way all their co-workers and fellow church parishioners will see their post about how the only songs they like are the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Old Rugged Cross" or the one about how they think Sarah Palin is a better role model for girls than Paris Hilton.

Then again, if they are going to fight, maybe they should stay at home.

REMEMBER WHEN PEOPLE THOUGHT I WAS BILLY LONG?

There was a time, as some of my long time readers will recall, when someone kept trying to out me. This person thought I was Billy Long. Why? I think it was because I was making fun of Vincent David Jericho.

It was through this nitwit that I learned of the political plans of Billy Long. When I closed the comments on the blog, this person continued sending messages to an e-mail listed on Missouri Radio Message Board. Using a phony e-mail address this person sent me an e-mail saying: "So you think you can run for congress to replace Roy Blunt you stupid ass hillbilly redneck motherf***er. I hope you loose." "I hope President Obama and the current Congress will go back and rework the First Amendment, so it is more clear on what sort of speech should be protected and what should not be allowed.

I believe that we should protect all the fun things that bring joy to people’s lives. Things like rock music, hip hop music, the Dixie Chicks, horror films, books by Sherman Alexie, The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, the Family Guy, the Smothers Brothers, Saturday Night Live, David Letterman, MTV and strip clubs (Boy, do I love a good lap dance! We should make it illegal for guys named "Stormy" to blog or comment on Facebook.

I think that the First Amendment should make holding a Tea Party Rally punishable with prison time. We should also delouse and force those Tea Party people to wear deodorant.

There should also be a provision that at least half of the tax money collected in the state of Missouri go to Desdinova, as a payment for all the good times he has giving me in the after life. THE BULLYCIDE OF PHOEBE PRINCE TRIAL HAS BEGUN

I have a deep interest in the tragic story of Phoebe Prince, since I was bullied in junior high. She committed suicide after being bullied at school. The Week has a in-depth look at the trial and case.

My hope is that this case would lead to a national bullying law. The ideal bullying law would hold the parents of the bully responsible. I would like to see the victim be compensated with at least 75% of the bully's family income. If there had been a law like this when I was bullied back in junior high, I could be living off the money from a local furniture manufacturing plant, but that is beside the point. This is one of those stories I love. Yahoo Music reports that super hot babe and pop music star Katy Perry was performing a concert at the high school she attended. She saw a jock boy, who wouldn't give her the time of day in high school, in the audience. She pointed him out in front of everyone at the concert and let the jerk have it.

Pointing out into the audience, she identified one specific member of the crowd and asked, "Is that Shane Lopes? You were the most popular kid in my class, but you never wanted to date me, it was always Amanda Wayne." As the crowd laughed and cheered, she adopted a bit of swagger and added, "Oh yeah, you really chose right, honey. What's up now, playa?" Becoming an international, Grammy-nominated pop star evidently does wonderful things for your self-confidence.

SAN DIEGO RADIO MARKET PROVES THE INDUSTRY WRONG

The talk among radio listeners in Springfield this week is the sudden disappearance of Bass Country 92.9 from the local radio dial has some folks upset. Of course, I believe there is WWWAAAAYYYY too much country music on local radio. My goal in radio was to eradicate country music from the air waves. Now it is to eradicate right-wing talk radio first and then gt rid of the country music.

You frequently hear radio big-shots claim that only country music and talk radio are the only formats that will thrive in the Ozarks, while other formats don't work. I heard for nearly a decade that a CHR station "wouldn't work anymore in the Ozarks." Last ratings period, Power 96.5 was third. I guess some people were wrong.

You hear many listeners say they like oldies and smooth jazz, but radio big-shots claim that those formats don't make money. Tell that to the San Diego radio market. The North County Times of San Diego has a great article about how supposedly unsuccessful radio formats are tops in that area of California.

I had a news director at one local radio station that ordered me to write traffic accident reports so that it sounded as if the younger person caused the accident. Even if the Missouri State Highway Patrol said in their report that the older driver was at fault, the younger driver was to be fingered as the cause of the accident because, "Older listeners and the advertisers like it that way. That way if an advertiser caused the accident, they won't be upset with us." That news director also wrote several negative stories about youth because "the older listeners like to hear bad things about teenagers."

Reuters/MSNBC had a story to about research conducted in German on this subject. Yes, old people do like negative stories about young people. I believe that many news organizations in the Ozarks (News Leader???) feel as my former news director did and these German researchers have shown. However, THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE NEGATIVE YOUTH STORIES NEED TO TAKE PRECEDENT OVER POSITIVE STORIES ABOUT YOUNG PEOPLE!!!

I have caught some of my family members watching a really creepy reality show 19 Kids & Counting starring the Duggar family of Tontitown, Arkansas. These people scare me. THE MOD SQUAD WAS COOLER THAN 21 JUMP STREET (Sorry Johnny Depp)

I realize many people of my generation will hate this post. There will even be some Baby Boomers that will hate this post.

In TV history, there were two cops shows that featured young people going undercover to investigate crimes involving other youth. These shows were the Mod Squad, which ran from 1968 to 1973. The other was 21 Jump Street, which ran from 1987 to 1991.

I remember watching an episode of 21 Jump Street when it first air on the then-new Fox Network and thinking, "This show sucks. I hope they come up with a better show than this or this network with go the way of Dumont and Overmyer Networks." The show not only ran longer than I expected, but Fox has survived, thanks to several great shows like the Simpsons, Family Guy and In Living Color.

It was about this time that a purchased a book called The Best of Crime and Detective TV: The Critics Choice by John Javna and Max Allan Collins. In this book, they list the TV show, Mod Squad, as one of the worst cop shows ever. They practically trash the show (They also slam Charlie's Angels, which makes me wonder about these guys).

I had only seen the Mod Squad reunion movie from the late 70's, but I still thought it probably had to be better than 21 Jump Street for the simple reason it was made in the late 60s/early 70s. As many of you readers know I have always had a special place for the psychedelic era.

I bought a VHS tape a few years ago that featured two episodes of the Mod Squad. I liked it quite a bit and wanted to buy another, but they were taken off the market for some reason. A year ago, I bought a DVD of the first season of the Mod Squad. It featured a longer version of the pilot episode which was on the VHS tape I had earlier. I have enjoyed it very much and plan to buy another DVD set of the show.

A few nights ago, I found the entire first season of 21 Jump Street on DVD at Wal-Mart for $5. I wondered if my opinion of 21 Jump Street would have changed after seeing more than one episode of the Mod Squad. Maybe I would be blown away by the show which gave us Johnny Depp. It turns out, I was right the first time I saw the show. It still sucks.

While people often malign the Mod Squad for being dated, 21 Jump Street is a product of it's time too. It comes with the things of the 80s that I hated. Bad part is some of those attitudes are still with us, thanks to the Fox News Network. As a matter of fact, I suspect that Bill O'Reilly wrote a few of these scripts under an alias. I bet Sarah Palin was a Jump Street fan.

The Mod Squad was from the age of peace, love and "Do Your Own Thing," while 21 Jump Street was from the age of "Just Say No," "Positive Peer Pressure," "overachieving" and "Vigilante Justice." Also, the characters on 21 Jump Street wear the clothes of that era that my mom forced me to wear. When I moved out and went to SMSU, I started dressing more like the Mod Squad.

First off, let's discuss the theme song and opening credits. The theme song of the Mod Squad was composed by Earl Hagen. Hagen created a tough and fast pasted cops show theme, augmented by a psychedelic/garage band organ. The visual was the main characters running through a dark warehouse.

The 21 Jump Street open featured a theme song sung by the cast that sounded like a bad Debbie Gibson song ("You're gonna learn something when we meet you after school" GAG!). The visuals were goofy clips of the cast from episodes. This gives you the impression you are watching a bad sitcom.

The overall plot of the shows are different in that Peter, Linc and Julie ("One White, One Black and One Blonde") were juvenile delinquents paying their debt to society by becoming undercover detectives. They did carry guns or badges. They often questioned the ethics of what they were doing. Yes, they do use quite a bit of the slang of that era. Pete seems to use the word "heavy" a lot, Julie says "groovy" quite a bit and Linc made the phrase, "Solid, Brother" a part of TV history.

On 21 Jump Street, Hanson, Penhall, Hoffs and Loki are cops who look young enough to infiltrate high schools. They carry guns and badges. When the Jump Street cops aren't whining about lawyers and judges "letting off" the people they bust, they insult each other.

The villains on Mod Squad are never the kids, but old, white guys trying to make a money by selling drugs or killing young people. One villain, played by Dabney Colman (Who else?) tells his sister, "Your hippie friends are driving down the value of my real estate." One villain is a Bill O'Reilly-ish talk show who tries to rape Julie. Yes, the message of the Mod Squad could be "No such thing as a bad kid" and "Don't trust anyone over 30."

On the other hand, 21 Jump Street embedded with the 80's idea of "young-people-are-evil." The criminal is always young. Everything from gun toting gang members taking a school hostage to a group of cocaine pushing, preppy-boys who gang-rape/murder a girl to sexually-repressed, pyromaniac Catholic school girls (No, I didn't make this last one up).

Jump Street episodes usually end with a PSA/lecture from the cast about under-age drinking, drug abuse or abstenence. Mod Squad ended with a crane shot of the characters and somber jazz music as the characters contemplate what just happened. Truth is the Mod Squad has a more expensive look to it than Jump Street.

Yes, this has probably been a useless rant, but I had to get this out of my system. I'm sorry Johnny Depp could have been like Clint Eastwood, John Travolta or Bruce Lee and gotten his start on a good show. As a matter of fact, he has said he hated the show.

Just remember, the Maharishi says never drink campaign from a paper cup. Solid, Brother!

COMEDY IS HARD (Especially for Rush Limbaugh)

The late, great Molly Ivins once said, "There are two kinds of humor. One kind that makes us chuckle about our foibles and our shared humanity -- like what Garrison Keillor does. The other kind holds people up to public contempt and ridicule -- that's what I do. Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful. I only aim at the powerful. When satire is aimed at the powerless, it is not only cruel -- it's vulgar. "

I heard a perfect example of this today on local radio. This was at work where I am forced to listen to Rush Limbaugh against my will, unfortunately. Rush tries to copy the successful morning radio shows by incorporating "comedy bits."

I heard one today that proves Molly Ivins was right. It was a commercial parody for hybrid cars. Usually, the so-called comedy on Rush's show is offensive. This commercial parody was just lame.

Part of the problem was the lack of truth or realism to it. Comedy and satire must have some basis in reality to make it work. Of course, Rush Limbaugh is detached from reality which explains why this didn't work.

The gist of this commercial parody was that hybrid drivers are snooty, arrogant, self-righteous peace lovers. According to this commercial parody, a hybrid car comes equipped with "leftist bumpers tickers" like "coexist spelled out in religious symbols." Most of the bumper stickers mentioned were the ones my college friends had on their cars. The commercial featured "hybrid owners" making fun of people who didn't own hybrids. The more I heard the more I realized that Rush Limbaugh must live on another planet.

I know a few hybrid owners. You would not know they owned a hybrid unless you asked, "Is that a hybrid?" None of them are covered in "leftist bumper stickers."

Frankly, people who drive hybrids don't cause trouble. Why make fun of them? Because Rush and his pals are like the bullies in school, they pick on a small harmless group of people to satisfy their sick and twisted needs.

It would make more sense to satirize the large pickup trucks driven by local rednecks.

You and your skanky cousin Wanda can listen to those satellite stations, while you have unprotected sex in the extra large cab. It even has room for your meth making equipment. There is also a gun rack too. Note: the six extra wide tires are not included."
