DESDINOVA'S DEMENTED CHRISTMAS THEATER PART 2

I've found two more You Tube Christmas presents for you. The first one I found by accident, but I thought I should post it because it fits me to a T. It is a 1932 Van Buren Studios cartoon entitled "The Snow Man." Most Van Buren cartoons are not very good. I'm going to be honest, I think most Van Buren Studios cartoons suck. They usually feature goofy looking animals "frolicking" and talking in silly, squeeking voices.

This cartoon is different. It cashes in on the hot Hollywood trend of the early 30s - horror films. This features a evil snowman who wrecks havoc and has a laugh like this, "Mwu-HAHAHAHAHA!" See why I like it. This is the unedited version.



Two versions of the same always pertinent message. Both of these are from MGM. One is a 1939Hugh Harman cartoon called "Peace On Earth." Old Grandpa Squirrel explains the irony or the popular Christmas expression "Peace on Earth, good will toward men." This was nominated for an Oscar.



In 1955, MGM's animation team of Hanna and Barbera updated the same story as "Good Will Toward Men." This was also nominated for an Oscar.

INGRID PITT 1937 - 2010

She was one of the sexiest female vampires in movie history. Buxom Hammer Horror film icon Ingrid Pitt died this week at age 73. The Baltimore Sun has her obituary. Her life story would make a great movie. Unlike the women she played in movies, she died without a stake through the heart. Rest in peace Ingird.

Note: Ingrid Pitt is no relation to local boy turned movie star Brad Pitt. Just wanted to make sure you knew that.

IDEA FOR A DESDINOVA NOVEL

I've noticed some of the other bloggers on SGF Blogs have published original fiction on their blog sites. I'm considering trying this. I thought it would be interesting to write a series of comical/satiric novels about myself - Desdinova the Super Villain of the Ozarks.

There have been very few super villains who have been the main character in a series of novels. The only ones I can think of are Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu and Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter. In each novel, Desdinova would commit a crime that would horrify the Ozarks, but would probably not be taken seriously in California, New York or even Oklahoma. The local authorities would be so incompetent that they would be unable to stop Desdinova.

The plot of the first novel would be similar to John Wyndham's The Midwich Cuckoos, which has been filmed twice under the title the Village of the Damned. The plot is also based on the old joke about "something in the water."

Desdinova develops a technique called "covert hydro fertilization." He uses this technique to impregnate women attending a convention for Republican women through complimentary bottled water given to those attending. The women are not only shocked that they are pregnant (since Republicans don't have sex) but their pregnancies only last three weeks.

Once the children are born, they begin to grow and mature rapidly. The boys, who all look like the cute little boy pictured above, have a maniacal laugh (Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!). They do horrible things to embarrass their parents in front of their rich friends. Slowly they begin to try and bump off their parents. That is when it is discovered that they are under the power of Desdinova and their goal is world domination! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Just an idea so far.

I TOLD UNKNOWN FILMS TO WATCH "PEEPING TOM" AND THEY DID!

I suggested that the fine folks over at Unknown Films watch Michael Powell's 1960 classic psychological horror film Peeping Tom. Not only did they watch it they wrote a nice review of it. Sounds like they liked it too.

Peeping Tom is sort of the British cousin of another popular film from that year, Psycho. Unlike Psycho, Peeping Tom wrecked the career of director Michael Powell, who mostly made family friendly films.

PAUL NASCHY IS DEAD 1934 - 2009

Spanish horror film icon Paul Naschy is dead. The actor best known for playing the werewolf named Waldemar Daninsky had been battle cancer for about a year. Here is an article about his death from Fangoria and his credits from IMDB.

MTV News Reports: The Cramps Singer Lux Interior Dead At 62

I first heard the Cramps on the Midnite Snack when I was in junior high. Some girl (Wonder who she was? She introduced me to great music) played The Cramps version of "Surfin Bird." I liked the Cramps because of their covers of obscure hits and the cover photos of Poison Ivy.

When I arrived at KSMU to do the Midnite Smack a few years later, I and some of my fellow Midnite Snack announcers thought that eventually we would take over the industry and put the Cramps music into heavy rotation. Unfortunatly, the industry is still run by money-grubbing weasels who seem to think radio should only consist of "family-friendly-timeless-love-songs," country music and Rush and his many wanna-be clones. Forrest J. Ackerman 1916 - 2008

Monster Kids who grew up between the 50s to the 80s are morning the loss of Forrest J. Ackerman, founder of Famous Monsters. Here is a good piece from the Los Angeles Times about his life and career. As he would have written in Famous Monsters, Prince Sirki (Joe Black to you Brad Pitt fans) has taken another soul from the Earth.

Halloween Movie Ideas

Many people who are too old to trick or treat (or go on a pub crawl) like to rent or purchase horror movies to watch. Granted many popular websites and magazines have "Scariest of All-Time" list, but most of those are films made during the last four decades. Some lazy people give you films made only since 2000. I'm going to give you different choices.

Traditional: The Universal monsters are always good for Halloween. That includes these set featuring Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolfman. Add to that the Hollywood's Legends of Horror Collection, which included Bela Lugosi and a proto-Goth Chick in Mark of the Vampire, Boris Karloff as politically incorrect villain Fu Manchu, the early color film Doctor X and it's boring sequel staring Humphrey Bogart, Mad Love with Peter Lorre as a Stewie Griffin prototype and Devil Doll with Lionel Barrymore as a Mrs. Doubtfire prototype. Also try out Frederic March's version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

A Ton of Fun for a Good Price: Check out Mill Creek's Horror Classics 50 Movie Pack. Some great stuff and a few clinkers, but for under $20 bucks in most stores.

For kids: Try to find Mad Monster Party featuring the voices of Boris Karloff, Phyllis Diller and Gale Garnett. There is also the 70's Saturday morning cartoon the Groovie Ghoulies.

Ultimate pick: It's a DVD (pic above) put out a few year ago by Something Weird called Monsters Crash the Pajama Party (Spook Show Spectacular). The title movie is a hokey beach party thing with guys in gorilla suits running around, however if you can maneuver the tricky menu on this you will find several things including Bert I. Gordon's Tormented (a psychological ghost thriller), an anti-cable TV ad using art work from Famous Monsters magazine, monsters movies made by kids from the 20's and 30's (seriously these are good), monstrous musical numbers from the Big Band era (one features a dancing skeleton puppet) and a goofy 50s educational film called Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (the sequel was called Don't Wet the Bed).

Bad Cinema at It's Finest: Andy Milligan's 1970 Vampire film the Body Beneath. Filmed in Highgate Cemetery (fooled some Brits who thought vampires were in Highgate) with red-headed-green vampire women in prom dresses, a hippie hunchback is set on fire and nailed to a church door, a maid has her eyes poked out with knitting needles and the fat ghost of Queen Victoria spouts anti-American sentiments. Yes, five days until Halloween, my favorite holliday. Of course, none of the radio stations in Springfield are playing wall-to-wall Halloween music like I have suggested they should. Watch - next week one of the stations will start playing wall-to-wall Christmas music just to irritate me. YOU SHOULDN'T PLAY CHRISTMAS MUSIC UNTIL DECEMBER!

I recently found another Halloween song. This is a German-made early disco song called "Soul Dracula." It was a big hit in Europe in 1975, which many people agree was the begining of the Disco Era. This should have been the nail in disco's coffin or stake in it's heart. I'm giving you this performance from a French TV variety show, because it has a cool looking Count Dracula, sexy dancing girls and a man in the audience with a dog puppet.

Vampira 1921 - 2008

One of TV pioneers past this past week with little notice. Her real name was Maila Nurmi. In 1954 she became Vampira, television’s first horror movie show host. Vampira was the first of a sadly dying breed of TV broadcaster. TV stations use several excuses as to why they won’t create shows like this, which flourished from 1957 until 1975. The main reason for their disappearance has to do with more network programming during the late night hours. The lamest of excuses is the old "our sales people can’t sell it to advertisers" or "advertisers won’t buy ads on those shows." BULL$H!#!

Vampira fans included Orson Wells, James Dean and Ed Wood Junior. Wood cast her in his epic Plan 9 From Outer Space. Here is her page on IMDB.

My Favorite Christmas Stuff and a few other things

Favorite Christmas movies (No real order): The Christmas Carol with Alister Sims as Scrooge, which is about an old miser that mistreats his help being scared out of his wits by ghost (Why would I like that?).
Christmas Vacation and White Christmas: I associate these two together because of a line Chevy Chase utters it Christmas Vacation. I prefer White Christmas to Holiday Inn (where Bing introduces the song "White Christmas") because Danny Kaye is great comedian and Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen are HOT!
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Santa Claus because they are just plain bad, but no maudlin like most Christmas stories for children. Best when viewed with the MST3K gang (I remember that Aunt Norma on Children's Hour would announce that you could see Santa Claus at the Tower Theater for free if you brought a canned good).
Let us not forget Christmas Story and Ralphie's quest for "the Holy Grail of Christmas Gifts" - the Red Ryder BB gun.

Favorite Christmas Songs: All time favorite: "Little Drummer Boy." When I was younger I liked the original by the Harry Simeone Chorale, but as I've grown older I LOVE the version by David Bowie and Bing Crosby which also incorporates as song called "Peace On Earth." BTW, Ozark Politics has posted the video clip of Der Bingle and the Thin White Duke singing this song (Note I feel the worst versions of this are by Kintaro and Johnny Cash).
2. "Happy Xmas (the War Is Over)" by John Lennon fits my mood about Christmas. I never get what I want and I usually have to work. Most Ozarkers hate this song, which is why it is number two on my list.
3. "Rudolph the Red Nose Raindeer" because like Rudolph, I was ostracized as a child. Mark my words I'll get back at them! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHA!
4. "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano. I like this because it is happy and peppy. It just makes me feel good. Also because like #2, Ozarkers hate it.
5. "Rockin Around the Christmas Tree" by Brenda Lee. It's happy and fun.

Other favorites include "Run Run Rudolph" by Chuck Berry, "Silent Night" (Any version except the Stevie "I'm in pain" Nicks version), "Sleigh Ride" (Any version, because you can't screw that song up), "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole, "Do You Here What I Hear?," "Mary's Boy Child" and "Calypso Noel" by Johnny Mathis.

The Christmas Songs I don't like: "I'll Be Home For Christmas" which is the official song of holiday depression.
"Home For the Holidays" people tell what they are doing for the holidays, not realizing the singer is probably breaking into their homes while they are gone. This song also features the guy with the pumpkin pie fetish.
"Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" by Elmo and Patsy. I used to like this when I was in junior high when a radio station would play this once a year. Matter of fact very little Christmas music was played on the radio when I was young. Now this song gets played to death on radio and it is usually requested by rednecks.
"I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" by Gayla Peevy. Uses to you only heard this on Dr. Demento. Now that some stations play all Christmas music during the holidays, this one gets too much airplay. I hated it before and I can't take it now that it gets played every five minutes. AAAAGGHHHH!
"Mary Did You Know" by Mark Lowery. Not only is Lowery overly dramatic but if you read Chapter One of the Book of Mark, Gabriel the angel explain this to Mary. Also, if you are a virgin and an angel tells you are going to have a baby, you probably know your child is going to be special. So why did Mark Lowery feel he has to tell Mary this. Ozarkers request this song a lot. They like it. That means I DON'T LIKE IT!

My fear is next Christmas someone will come up with "Mary Did You Know My Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer."

Favorite TV Christmas episodes: Dragnet: Big Little Jesus (Black and white version) - Friday and Smith look for a stolen Baby Jesus. The culprit is a small Hispanic boy who wanted to give the baby a ride in his wagon he got for Christmas.

Have Gun Will Travel: Hanging Cross - Paladin has to intervene in a fight between a rich rancher and Indians over the custody of a small boy. Paladin hangs up his guns because "this is a night of peace."

Twilight Zone: Night of the Meek - Art Carney is a department store Santa with a magic bag. If I tell you any more I'll give away the ending.

WKRP - a Christmas Carol-like dream for Mr. Carlson brought on by Johnny Fever's Brownies. Scariest part: In the future, Herb is the only employee of a totally automated WKRP. He even voice tracks his sales calls.

STUFF NOT RELATED TO CHRISTMAS BUT TO THE HOLIDAY MOVIES:

Check out the 1964 Vincent Price film Last Man On Earth. It is based on the book I Am Legend. Author Richard Matheson hated it and made American International change the name of it. I find it to be better than Omega Man, a 1972 movie which Matheson didn't like either.

Also try to find a copy of Andy Milligan's Bloodthirsty Butchers. It is his 1970 version of the Sweeney Todd story. This movie is more fun than the 1930's Todd Slaughter version of Sweeney Todd because it has a fight broken up by a clown in drag and a pie containing a lady's nipple (although I think it looks like the bottom of a purple onion).

Halloween Movies Suggetions - Five Directors Good and Bad

These are just five quick suggestions for movies you might want to watch tonight. I narrowed it down to five good and five "bad but fun" movies from famous directors. I wish I had more time to give you a list of great directors and films (It is hard to narrow it down to five). On the other hand the five "bad" directors had more than one "bad film that is fun to watch." Also these are my favorites not necessarily which one is best.
