WHY I STOPPED TALKING ABOUT POLITICS AND NEWS

Someone sent me an e-mail asking why I wasn't posting anything about politics. Andy Cline of Rhetorica once said I wrote some of the best satire of anyone. He was one of the few who liked it.
Not only were there many people in the Ozarks who didn't like it. I received many death threats, mainly from an idiot at Mansfield, Mo. The main problem was some people in the local media, including co-workers, who didn't like it. They felt I made fun of the wrong people or things. I've been told I've been blacklisted by at least one of the radio clusters here in Springfield (Clear Channel). The co-workers who didn't like my opinions went to management and tried to get me fired.
I should note that I'm not angry about the state of the country like I was when I first started the old blog, however, I am not happy with the state of the Ozarks. I may never be. I've hated the Ozarks since I was in elementary school.
I have figured out that nothing makes Ozarkers more upset than someone having fun, being entertained and not griping about politics. So that is what I am doing with my current blog. I'm entertaining people.  I'm much happier and I'm having fun. The response is much slower but has always been very positive. That is what I like.

WKBT's JENNIFER LIVINGSTON IS MY NEW HERO

I have posted anything on this blog in awhile. I prefer the more fun and less controversial post on the retro blog. However, I wanted to comment on this story because it hits home to me. Since I'm involved in the Countdown to Halloween, I decided to post this here since it is also in keeping with many of the themes of this blog.

Not since Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater have I been so proud of someone for standing up for themselves. No doubt you have seen this video of WKBT anchor Jennifer Livingston responding to a hateful e-mail from a viewer.

I'm glad management let her strike back at the idiot that wrote that hateful e-mail. From my experience in the media here in the Ozarks, if one person sends the station or newspaper an asinine complaint about an on-air person, that on-air person loses their job or gets "reassigned."

Some people are leaving snide remarks on You Tube and Facebook attack Livingston for doing this. These people do not realize the stupid crap that we in the media put up with from some people. She referred to this person as a "bully" and that is as accurate a description of many of these people.

Many people complain about silly things like hearing a commercial too often or the radio station is playing too many African-American artist (Sadly, that is a frequent complaint in the Ozarks and they usually don't use the term "African-American" when they make this complaint). I even worked at a country radio station (Don't hold it against me) where a woman complained that we played too many songs "which portrayed spousal abuse in a negative way" and "took the women's side when the husband is usually the victim." We had to stop playing "Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks, "Broken Wings" by Martina McBride and "Goodbye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks. Only in the Ozarks do we giving into the request of the proud mother of a wife beater.

People also don't realize there are people who do nothing but make complaints to the media. These people must have about six TVs tuned to each station and several radios on at all times, so they can hear or see something to complain about. Everyone in the media in this town knows these people, because they have all had to deal with these stupid people. Now these people are even more obnoxious, because they can friend every TV and radio station, every on-air personality or newscaster and attack them when ever they want. They also now have the advantage of suckering in more stupid right-wing, media bashing nut jobs to help them. This, of course, goes along with my last post.

Much of this comes from one simple factor, these people who make these complaints do not think that people in the media are human beings. They would just as soon see us unemployed or dead. Many of these media complainers do this for attention. I doubt these people would want anyone to criticize them at their job, but they see no problem lashing out at those of us in the media.

If the managers of media outlets would ignore these people or allow the on-air talent to address these critics, as Jennifer Livingston so eloquently did, rather than giving in to them, we have less of this hateful bullying toward talented, dedicated people trying to provide people with the information they need. Let's face it, if Ozarkers had their way, all of the highly intelligent journalist would be replaced with Baptist preachers or auctioneers with big cowboy hats.

NEWS MEDIA SHOULDN'T ALLOW IDIOTS TO COMMENT ON STORIES

You frequently hear people lament that the news media of today is not as good as the news media of the past. Then again, you hear that about everything. When I entered college as a media major, being in the news media was considered one of the ultimate jobs a person could have. After all, the news media was America's window to the world. If I wanted to I could choose the path to belong to that elite group with such people as Walter Cronkite, Chet Hutley and David Brinkley, and Peter Jennings (All pictured above). I've got a surprising eye opener for you. Watch the evening world news on CBS, NBC and ABC, then watch an old evening world news cast on You Tube from the 60s, 70s or 80s. They haven't changed except for the technology and personalities.

On the other hand watch a clip of CNN from the 80s and then watch a little of it now, you WILL see a big change. Personally, cable news has went down in quality. Also, you would be shocked if you saw Internet news pages of the 90s versus today's.

Let me give you my opinion about what made the men above trusted voices. They were larger than life figures in Washington, DC or New York. When they told you what happened, you accepted it as the truth and didn't argue with them. Now thanks to Facebook, Bubba in Bois D'Arc or NellieBelle in Piedmont, Arkansas can make a snide remark about a story KYTV or KOLR ran on the 6 pm news or bad mouth Brian Williams or Scott Pauly.

I feel the comments on local news stories on Facebook has reached some very dangerous and tacky levels. After a recent tragic accident here in the Ozarks, people began leaving comments accident if the man and woman, who died in the accident were having an extra marital affair. WHAT DOES THAT MATTER? WHY WOULD PEOPLE BRING UP THAT AT SUCH A DELICATE TIME?

Another problem is how Internet news like Yahoo and MSN is driven not by importance, but what people have shared, searched or read. Never mind important world news or national news, Yahoo and MSN is going to give you headlines on Anne Hathway's ugly dress or a video of cute kittens on You Tube.

Let me also add that it is either time to do away with Letters to the Editor in newspapers or make stricter rules on what letters get printed. Some local newspapers run letters from the same idiots week after week and day after day. I was recently looking at some back issues of the Springfield News Leader and discovered that many of the crazy right-wing letters in the 80s and 90s were from the same people EVERYDAY. Many of these were stupid too. Case in point: Ron Davis in his Chatter column (which was hated by these idiot NL letter writers) had said that he wished Guns N Roses would perform in Branson. Several brain damaged individuals didn't want Guns N Roses in Branson, because they considered them "vulgar" and "untalented." You know who else they didn't want to come to Branson? ANDY WILLIAMS. Yes, the Letters to the Editor section in the Springfield News Leader was once filled with hateful letters from Ozarkers who didn't want Andy Willaims to bring his "Hollywood values" and "Las Vegas values" to "ruin" the Ozarks. This was after he had told some an interviewer that some of the Branson shows were crappy.

The one thing I have learned from working in the media is that the majority of people think you do a great job but never tell you. The people who constantly criticize the media are insanely jealous of media people because they chose a bad career, like real estate or auctioneering.

Of course, opinions like these are why I'm considered the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! 

AFTER FIVE YEARS, NO MORE UPDATES HERE

On this, the fifth anniversary of my starting this blog, I wish to announce that I will no longer be updating this blog. I will continue to post over at my new blog, The New Adventures of Desdinova the Super Villain of the Ozarks. Please continue to follow me by clicking on the link above and choose "follow." It has gotten too time consuming to try to post material to both blog sites.

I should also let some long time readers know that I deleted quite a few post. Why?

1. Irrelevance. This blog originally tried to be topical. However, it was to a fault. Many of my post really didn't need to be here any more. Some of them I read and couldn't figure out who or what they were about. I had to Google the names.
2. Broken links. I linked to some local news websites for some of my post. Those stories or articles are gone. Many of the times I posted to material on YouTube (especially music) has been removed. So I removed those post as well.
3. I deleted things that might keep me from a finding a new job. I apparently stepped on a few toes of some people in the media, as well as most of the Ozarks. Anyone who knows me knows that I love the media, which is why I studied it at S.M.S.U (now M.S.U) and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in it. I felt that many of my statements about the local media were nothing more that constructive criticism. Some didn't feel that way. One company, apparently told someone I know, that I have been blacklisted from working at that company. I should point out that I was much rougher on another company and an on-air "personality" that worked there. Of course, that company took care of that problem. The criticism I gave the company that blacklisted me was mild to what I gave their rival across town. Then again, I also had some people in the company I worked for that, instead of thinking what I did was funny and laughing along, were upset about my comments about a rival company and it's on-air "personality." I knew that people in the Ozarks are touchy, but I didn't realize that people in the media were that touchy too.

However, I left quite a few things because I felt, if you were offended by what I wrote, you probably deserve it. Much of what I have posted here is satire. It was just a fun way of looking at political opinions held by many here in the Ozarks. Many of those who complained were what I called "weenie bloggers" and talk radio host. They seemed to be a humorless group of people, who made themselves miserable because their extreme beliefs. I feel that life is too short to not be able to laugh at world around us. I also found it interesting that many of these bloggers and talk radio host, who hated me so much are no longer around. That was part of the reason I decided to change the blogs direction.


I thought this blog might lead to a job as a morning show host, but apparently that wasn't going to happen. The new blog is focused on things I can write about much more easily. There will probably be less animosity and violence advocated toward me. My hope is I can develop a radio show, preferably syndicated, that will be tied into the retro theme. Contrary to what some would tell you, I believe there is a need for that type of programming in many radio markets.

I plan to leave this blog up for now. I plan to resurrect some of the post on the new blog from time to time. I hope to hear from some of you fans on the new blog. 

DESDINOVA & HIS TWIN BROTHER ARE ON THE BEACH

I just wanted you readers to know that I and my "good twin brother" have exiled ourselves to the beach, as they say in the industry.

Also look for a change in this blog. We have been looking at trends in other blogs (such as Retrospace and Neato Coolville), as well as what post on this site have been most popular. We have decided that a change may take place.

There are many great blogs covering local and national news. I can't keep up, so I will be shifting my focus away from that stuff and focusing on entertainment and pop culture. Of course, when a person focuses on pop culture and entertainment, Ozarkers get upset. As you know, I LOVE TO UPSET OZARKERS!

CLYDE CLIFFORD'S BEAKER STREET TO LEAVE THE AIRWAVES

Clyde Clifford and Beaker Street are not just Arkansas radio legends, but legends in the Midwest and Southern part of the United States. Sadly, Clyde Clifford has been told by the management of KKPT that his last show will be on Feb. 6, 2011.

Beaker Street was one of the many radio shows that inspired me to get into radio. I used it as a model for my "Psychedelic Limits" segment of the Midnite Snack on KSMU in the late 80s.

Unfortunately, radio does no longer understands the value programs like Beaker Street and Clyde Clifford. Most people in radio management these days prefer talk shows hosted by sleazy financial advisers and right-wing, conservative, hate mongers or infomercials dangerous weight loss supplements and "auctions' for stuff that used to be given away as prizes to "the fifth caller."

Of course, opinions, like this one, is why I'm considered the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

PARENTS IN THE OZARKS ARE ANAL FASCIST

I'm hearing commercials on local radio for a company called Federal Protection. They are a home security firm, which is okay. What I find ludicrous about their ads is the claims that they can text you when "the kids get home from school." They also will "notify you" if someone "opens your liquor cabinet." This is probably used by the same goofy Ozarks parents, who have Net Nanny on their computers and block MTV and the Cartoon Network on the television. Probably these people have the Ozarks spanking fetish.

Trust me on this folks, I could have used a good stiff drink when I got home from school.

THE LEADER & PRESS ALSO THOUGHT INJURED CHILDREN WERE FUNNY

While I'm on this subject, you hear some Ozarkers complain about Gannett run News Leader and how it isn't as good as the old Springfield Leader & Press. One idiotic complaint you see from some of the racist who write Letters to the Editor (and was addressed quite a bit by Brian Lewis when he was at the News Leader) is that the News Leader puts too many photos of African-Americans and gay people on the front page.

I guess they want to go back to 1960, when the Leader & Press thought it was funny to make fun of a little girl with bruised and blacked eyes. This is not funny, it is disgusting and looks painful. Of course, Ozarkers enjoy seeing pain inflicted on children. They also were happy that this child was neither gay not African-American.

Too bad none of the local radio stations will play wall-to-wall Halloween music for even one day, much less two months like they do with Christmas music. NEWSPAPER DEMOTED EDITOR FOR OFFENDING BUSINESS MEN

This sounds like the kind of garbage that goes on here in the Ozarks. The Miami Herald has this disgusting story of Autumn Drussell (pictured above). She was the editor of the Stoughton Courier Hub, until she wrote an editorial about how she was shopping at big box chain stores because they had lower prices. She suggested that local business owners improve customer service and "stop bad mouthing their areas."

That caused a doofus with a hardware store to write a snide and threatening letter to the editor about Drussell. In the letter, he also said he wouldn't advertise with the newspaper again. She was demoted by the management of the newspapers owners, Unified Newspaper Group, which is a division of Woodward Communications Inc.

I have seen this too much in my years with various local media groups. Probably, the salesmen started wetting their panties and crying that the local business owners, who are probably arrogant jerks, will drop advertising. They (sales people) go to management and ask for Drussell to be punished or fired. Management, being both greedy and gutless, demote Drussell for writing an honest opinion piece.

This story sounds like a Sinclair Lewis novel.

Now, if this was the Ozarks, the newspaper would then replace the educated and experienced journalist (Drussell) with either a Republican party operative or an Republican business man, like an auctioneer, who have no experience or education in journalism or media. Or worse, a sales person talks management into letting his redneck brother-in-law write editorials. Sadly, this is the is the mentality of the local media.

This is the kind of opinion that makes me the SUPER VILLAIN OF THE OZARKS!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

SAN DIEGO RADIO MARKET PROVES THE INDUSTRY WRONG

The talk among radio listeners in Springfield this week is the sudden disappearance of Bass Country 92.9 from the local radio dial has some folks upset. Of course, I believe there is WWWAAAAYYYY too much country music on local radio. My goal in radio was to eradicate country music from the air waves. Now it is to eradicate right-wing talk radio first and then gt rid of the country music.

You frequently hear radio big-shots claim that only country music and talk radio are the only formats that will thrive in the Ozarks, while other formats don't work. I heard for nearly a decade that a CHR station "wouldn't work anymore in the Ozarks." Last ratings period, Power 96.5 was third. I guess some people were wrong.

You hear many listeners say they like oldies and smooth jazz, but radio big-shots claim that those formats don't make money. Tell that to the San Diego radio market. The North County Times of San Diego has a great article about how supposedly unsuccessful radio formats are tops in that area of California.

I've always said Californians were smarter than Ozarkers. Of course, that opinion has made me the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

OLD PEOPLE ENJOY NEGATIVE STORIES ABOUT YOUNG PEOPLE

I had a news director at one local radio station that ordered me to write traffic accident reports so that it sounded as if the younger person caused the accident. Even if the Missouri State Highway Patrol said in their report that the older driver was at fault, the younger driver was to be fingered as the cause of the accident because, "Older listeners and the advertisers like it that way. That way if an advertiser caused the accident, they won't be upset with us." That news director also wrote several negative stories about youth because "the older listeners like to hear bad things about teenagers."

Reuters/MSNBC had a story to about research conducted in German on this subject. Yes, old people do like negative stories about young people. I believe that many news organizations in the Ozarks (News Leader???) feel as my former news director did and these German researchers have shown. However, THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE NEGATIVE YOUTH STORIES NEED TO TAKE PRECEDENT OVER POSITIVE STORIES ABOUT YOUNG PEOPLE!!!

After all, you are reporting the news, not writing for 21 Jump Street.

ANDY OF MAYBERRY FANS IN THE OZARKS CELEBRATE THE RETURN OF THE B&W EPISODES

If you watch the news you know that there are horrible things going on. The worst oil spill in U.S history, never ending war in the middle east, Nashville destroyed by flooding, not to mention the economy, unemployment, and housing market, however, Ozarkers are rejoicing.

Yes, Ozarkers are wetting themselves with happiness because KY 3 has announced that they will be showing the black and white episodes of the Andy Griffith Show starting next week. As you know I think Ozarkers are obsessive about the Andy Griffith Show to such a point it is nauseating. KY 3 announced this on their Facebook sight Thursday and soon Andy of Mayberry fans were giddy with glee.

I personally don't hate the color episodes of the Andy Griffith Show. It is shocking how some grown people, men especially, get angry when KY 3 or TV Land shows the color episodes. Of course, I have a theory about the local guys who get upset about the color episodes of the Andy Griffith Show.

I still cannot believe that none of the local TV stations have never ran Batman in reruns. Maybe they are still upset about this incident during the shows original run. I'll just have to settle for this You Tube channel.

And why was Get Smart never shown in reruns in Springfield? Or the Adventures of Superman or Have Gun Will Travel or Dark Shadows? Instead I have to buy the DVDs to see these shows, while the Andy of Mayberry fans get to watch their favorite show for free.

Besides, who would want to live in Mayberry? They probably have only one radio station and it is a country station owned by the Shepherd Group that plays that "Chicken Fried" song every hour. Also, there is no diversity in Mayberry. Everyone in Mayberry is WHITE. Yuck!

NO MORE FRAIZER GLENN MILLER RADIO ADS

The Missouri Broadcasters Association issued a statement this evening on the on-going battle with hate-monger and supposed "write-in" U.S. Senate candidate Fraizer Glenn Miller. Miller was buying radio ads on Missouri radio stations. He was claiming that since he was a U.S. Senate candidate that the radio stations had to sell him ad time.

MBA and Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster filed a request for a declaratory ruling from the FCC on the matter.

"On Friday, June 18, 2010, the Missouri Broadcasters Association was advised by telephone that the FCC’s response to its petition would be in the form of informal, oral advice. The advice was received from the Media Bureau’s Policy Division staff. The advice was that, on the facts and pleading submitted by all parties, including Mr. Miller, it would not be unreasonable for Missouri broadcasting stations to determine that Miller is not a bona fide write-in candidate and therefore, Missouri broadcasters may deny him access to broadcast their stations.

This advice is an affirmation of the position taken by the MBA, Attorney General Koster and Zimmer Broadcasting and the FCC, prior to the filing of our petition. It confirms that a broadcaster who decides that Miller has not established himself to be a bona fide write-in candidate would not be acting unreasonably. Therefore, in our view, a Missouri broadcaster would not be held liable for having denied access retroactively.

The MBA continues to believe that Mr. Miller’s demands for mandatory access were an abuse of the privilege contained in the Communications Act for bona fide candidates. The Communications Act creates a special mandatory-access rule only for federal candidates, carefully limited to party nominees and those who are “bona fide,” or active and credible in the circumstances of the particular race. This result validates the MBA’s position in its petition and reply comments that Miller has not established himself to be a bona fide candidate. Miller is merely attempting to use broadcasters as a megaphone for his message, and broadcasters are not required to allow themselves to be used as a purveyor of personal views merely upon the claim of candidacy for federal office."

WASN'T MY GENERATION SUPPOSED TO CHANGE RADIO FOR THE BETTER?

Once again, I've decided to travel back into time to my SMSU days. I've been reflective lately on all the hope and promise of those days that has been largely stomped on the repressive Ozarks culture.

Let's look at one facet of my media career, which is radio. As a media major, I studied newspaper, radio and television. I had a particular interest in radio. Part of this came from the simple fact that i was always interested in improving the local radio scene. I used to do some DXing late at night as a kid and I felt that many of the local radio station needed to be more like the major market stations. It was my destiny to try to change things around here, especially KWLT FM 92 and KJEL in Lebanon.

Another thing that energized my interest in radio, was an article in Rolling Stone about college radio was becoming a big influence in the music world. Rolling Stone and Billboard both had college rock charts. According to Rolling Stone, the young people in college radio were going to revitalize radio with their creativity and free-form programming.

The only radio stations in Springfield offering internships were KTTS, KTXR and KSMU. Rumor has it one of the rock stations in town stopped offering internships because they didn't want any college kids telling people about rampant cocaine use by the staff. I took an internship at KSMU, because they allowed students to program their own music on the Midnight Snack show. I used to listen to the Midnight Snack in Lebanon. It was there that I first fell in love with the Sex Pistols, Ramones and the various paisley underground bands.

College radio eventually beat mainstream radio to probably the greatest band of the 90's, Nirvana. Springfield even had a radio station playing college rock, Z105 the Planet. Yes, it looked liked my generation (now dubbed Generation X by the press). SO WHAT HAPPENED???

Several factors played into our lack of power in 2010. The major explanation goes back to the Telecom Act of 1996, which opened the door for the large radio corporations like Clear Channel, Cumulus, Journal and Citadel. Here is hoping the FCC reverses all this consolidation soon. With consolidation, most creative program directors lost their power in favor on PD for the whole country. Sadly, most of these companies adapted the attitude that "only country and talk are profitable in the post 9-11 society" and many alternative station were changed to something else. So then, why has radio lost so much money and listeners in the past few years? Could it be you are driving away listeners with that talk and country garbage?

A major problem that isn't talked about is the animosity and resistance faced us Generation X-college-radio-trained-talent from an element of white-conservative-Baby Boomers, who were in management, not just in radio but other media. These balding, fat middle aged guys wanted to keep us out of the industry. They also did like the changes we wanted to make. A Rolling Stone article once gave a name to a name to a notorious alternative rock radio destroyer, Randy Michaels of Jacor. I should also point out that Jacor (later engulfed by Clear Channel) owned the Premier Radio, which produces such garbage as Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura and Delilah. Do you see a pattern here?

However, there is a nostalgia for the college radio era and it's music. A friend of mine works at a book and music store. He has noticed people in their 40s buying the "college rock" of the 80s and 90s. Two blogs, Spinning Indie and Slicing Eyeballs, discuss both old and new college rock.

There is hope that there could be a turn around in the radio industry and us Generation X college radio slackers will save the industry from the suit wearing, Rush lovers in the big corporations. We are radio's only hope.

BEING IN THE MEDIA USED TO MEAN SOMETHING

I've been thinking back to my college days lately. From the moment I entered Missouri State University (then Southwest Missouri State University) in the fall of 1987, I knew what I wanted to major in and what field I want to pursue: media. I felt I could do work in any media field: radio, TV or newspaper. At that time there was no such creature as "the Internet."

After working for over twenty years in all three forms of media, I feel that being a member of the media is being rendered meaningless by corporate greed and their need to pander to those who hate the media.

For instance, at least two of the major corporate radio chains have cut the jobs of local talent and replaced them with inexperienced, untrained, uneducated part-timers, who are simply there to make sure the automation runs a feed from another city. This has already caused some embarrassment for one company during a recent tornado.

The talk radio industry enjoys hiring people who are outside broadcasting or journalism to host shows. A big trend is to hire out-of-work politicians, political consultants or business people to be "the voice of reason." Many of the talk radio host (some local host included) have their "callers" prearranged. These are friends reading from scripts or are political consultants masquerading as "regular people." (How many regular people do you know named "Jack-Jack") Local some of the talk radio shows have very little screening or gate keeping. Part of this is due to time constraints of the "open forum" nature of the show, but also because Bubba Earl Thorndike from Dry Knobb or Betty June Nosbey from Koshginong gets upset if they don't get on the air to give their opinion.

Locally, the News Leader has let go of several well-known, respected and talented journalist in favor of giving a column to people like this redneck idiot.

Websites for local TV stations and newspapers have "comment sections" which allow Bubba Earl and Betty June to slam a story if they don't like it and overrule what ever KOLR's Joy Robertson or KYTV's Ethan Forhetz said. "That'll learn dem thar media folks a lessin."

And don't get me started on the "stars" created by reality TV!

RBR/TVBR reports that a Republican lawmaker in Michigan wants journalist to be licensed by the state. Bad part, I agree with a little of this. A law requiring a journalist to get a license is wrong (especially when you read the provisions), however, holding corporate media management responsible for hiring skilled, educated journalist rather than amateur hacks that "represent the average citizen" when most of these people sound like Klan members.

What in the long run cost less? The salary of a good journalist/media person or a lawsuit after Bubba and Betty slandered someone or didn't air a tornado warning.

I guess what bothers me is the fact that I got into the media to be a "voice" people listened to and trusted. Every place I have worked has forced me into the background while making the amateur the "voice" that I should be. Supposedly, their opinions and interest are more important than mine. That is why I had to start this blog is because some people in the commercial media don't feel I represent the "typical Ozarks view" or my ideas "might upset" Ozarkers.

Of course, that is why I'm considered the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

MORE GATEKEEPING NEEDED BY THE LOCAL MEDIA

I have come to the conclusion that concern for integrity is lacking in the local media. Part of this comes from the incident this last week involving the News Leader’s editorial page, the other from my own job experience.

I believe part of the problem is the obsession with amateur talent or outside participation. First of all, let’s clear the air on why this has suddenly become popular. It is not to give the common man a voice as much as it is to save money. Amateur talent in the newspaper editorial section or on
talk radio is cheaper than hiring a j-school grad or person with a media degree. Think for a minute how many byline reporters and columnist are no longer with the News Leader. Now the News Leader gives us garbage like the “Patriot’s Pen.”

I have trouble with this guy in the News Leader being called “a patriot.” I feel “patriot” is a title you have to earn after death. A true patriot would never consider him/herself a patriot. A person who dubs himself a patriot is usually a major douche bag.

The overall racist tone of the column was bad enough but the fact the News Leader defended this guy and his use of the term “colored” shows a lack of integrity by management. This is not the News Leader pandering to their redneck critics in the community rather than adhere to journalistic standards.

This leads me to a similar problem I faced in my job this week. A caller on one of the radio programs I produce began advocating violence toward Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig. I cut the caller off. It turns out the caller was a friend of the host. It was a rigged call to make it look like people actually agreed with the opinion expressed by the host. I’ve told my
supervisor I didn’t want to be associated with this kind of stuff as a shows producer. I feel very strongly about what my name is attached to. I may find there are repercussions to this decision, but contrary to what one former talk radio show host and his sycophantic fans would have you believe, I have morals and standards.

I feel we need to work on our integrity when it comes to the amateur commentators. There needs to be more gatekeeping by the local media, if we are going to allow people without any formal media training to "take over" our air waves and editorial pages. They should have to adhere to the same rules as the real media people or we will end up looking like the hillbillies people in the major markets think we are.

Of course, opinions like these are why I’m considered the Super-Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu- HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

WHY DO I GET FLAK FOR DOING THE PSYCHEDELIC LIMITS ON KSMU?

I've mentioned before that my first job in radio was at KSMU-FM. I was one of several young media students who worked overnights as part of a show called the Midnight Snack. We would take in our own got college credit and, most importantly, we got radio experience. Once a month, I would play only psychedelic music on my show with some comedy from the likes of Firesign Theater, George Carlin and Cheech & Chong. I called this segment, The Psychedelic Limits. I was inspired to do this show from a syndicated radio show called Flashback (which didn't air in Springfield at the time - it later ran on KWTO-FM and KKLH), the All-Night Coffee House on KCFX, and Beaker Street. Many of my radio instructors at MSU (then SMSU) told me to mention the show in my resume because "it would show potential employers that I was creative."


For some reason, I have gotten flak from several people in the radio industry (and radio fans too) for doing this show. I was told by one former boss that the show was "unethical" and the "equivalent of pushing drugs on the radio at the tax payers expense." This was from someone who thinks great radio is a program called "Bids for Bargains."


At my current job, my college work gets the same kind of disrespect. I was told the music I played on that show was "hippie" music and "hippies have ruined America." That's funny, I thought it was the Republicans. Oddly enough, "hippies" are still a worry for some of my co-workers. They tend prefer the company of redneck women who talk about blowing people's heads off or old men who wish we would bring segregation back.

I would just like to go on record for saying that the lyrics of most psychedelic songs are more creative and meaningful than most of the country songs that Ozarkers and local radio management find so wonderful (Yes, Desdinova has been forced to play country music in his radio career). I'll give you the lyrics to four songs I played on my KSMU psychedelic show: "Incense and Peppermint" by Strawberry Alarm Clock, "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I" by the Yardbirds, "Requiem For the Masses" by the Association and "Planet Caravan" by Black Sabbath. Now compare these to the silly lyrics of "Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown Band, a favorite of many Ozarkers. I think you can see my point (BTW: Do you hear the line "A yardstick for lunatics with one point of view" and immediately think of Glenn Beck?). Some feel this music is destructive. That is dumb, especially considering that the same people think good radio is having a host wishing for the Springfield school board to die in a car accident or hoping that someone burns down MSU.

Much of this bile from the local industry comes from the fact that this was on KSMU, which is not only public radio, but owned by a state university. I was supposedly "wasting the taxpayers dollars." They could have been spent on something like a war. That would be a much better use of taxpayer money than my training for the radio industry. Oh yeah, I forgot, I should have gotten a MBA.

I just think I'm getting too much heat over something that could have helped the industry. Of course, opinions like this are why I'm considered the Super-Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

ENTERCOM, MBA & KOSTER AGAINST RACIST RADIO ADS

Why is Kansas City radio better than Springfield radio? Because they have the guts to stand up to racist nutcase Frazier Glen Miller. The Radio Business Report has two stories about the fight against local hate-group leader's radio commercials for his "write-in campaign" for U.S Senate. The Missouri Broadcaster Association has asked for assistance from Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster. They say the must-carry rule may not apply to Miller's offensive ads since he is a "write-in candidate."

Also in the Radio Business Report, the Entercom radio cluster, which Miller bought air time on, is going to give his money to the Olathe Chapter of the NAACP and the Jewish Community Relation Board.

Recently, these same ads ran on a Springfield cluster. Only one TV station mentioned it as part of their news. WHERE IS SPRINGFIELD'S OUTRAGE?

Nowhere. Springfield has a bad tendency to condone people like Frazier Glen Miller. We even have local lawmakers who will take up for these characters when law enforcement tries to warn people about them.

Springfieldians and Ozarkers get upset when they hear rap/hip-hop, heavy metal or (yes, even in 2010) psychedelic music on local radio, but if a Klansman's hate filled commercials are fine. After all, he has the thing that matters to Springfieldians & Ozarkers more than anything - MONEY! Greed and racism are considered "good values" in the Ozarks. Luckily, the rest of the state doesn't see it that way.
