COMPOSER JOHN BARRY DIES AT 77

Many of my favorite film scores were composed by John Barry. Barry is best know for his work on the James Bond films. One of his first film scores was for a 50's juvenile delinquent film Beat Girl. That song, featuring the twangy guitar of Vic Flick, was recycled by Fatboy Slim into the 90's hit song "Rockefeller Skank."

He died over the weekend at age 77. Here is the BBC news obit. If you want to check out his music you can find a whole page of downloads at Amazon.com.

CLYDE CLIFFORD'S BEAKER STREET TO LEAVE THE AIRWAVES

Clyde Clifford and Beaker Street are not just Arkansas radio legends, but legends in the Midwest and Southern part of the United States. Sadly, Clyde Clifford has been told by the management of KKPT that his last show will be on Feb. 6, 2011.

Beaker Street was one of the many radio shows that inspired me to get into radio. I used it as a model for my "Psychedelic Limits" segment of the Midnite Snack on KSMU in the late 80s.

Unfortunately, radio does no longer understands the value programs like Beaker Street and Clyde Clifford. Most people in radio management these days prefer talk shows hosted by sleazy financial advisers and right-wing, conservative, hate mongers or infomercials dangerous weight loss supplements and "auctions' for stuff that used to be given away as prizes to "the fifth caller."

Of course, opinions, like this one, is why I'm considered the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

First a short interview with Clyde Clifford during a show. It was conducted by a reporter from KUAR.

Next an aircheck of the original KAAY Beaker Street show. The aircheck is from the early 70s. It is 13 O'clock on Krune-day, 55th of Bloong. Heavy, man!

I CAN'T BELIEVE I USED TO LIKE THAT SONG

Did you ever stop liking something that you thought was "cool" when you were younger? Recently, I discovered that I no longer liked a song from my youth called "88 Lines About 44 Women." The song was by a group called the Nails. It kept coming up in my Ipod and Itunes. I had transferred it from a CD of 80's hits, so it wasn't like I had paid to download it.

You see when I was in junior high this song would occasionally be heard on the radio. If it was heard it was after 10 p.m at night. The reason was it had "dirty words" in it. I don't think I ever heard a "censored" version of this song. Somebody in Hammons Hall had it on a tape or record, because you could hear it playing down the hall. I didn't hear it again until I bought this 80's hits CD.

As it began playing on my Ipod and Itunes in shuffle mode, I noticed something. "88 Lines About 44 Women" is a really lame song. It is only about five minutes long, but it seems to go on for an eternity. The singer reads the lyrics like an NPR radio host, while the music sounds like it was played on a children's keyboard. The lyrics are simple yet so random. I could write new lyrics to this song and nobody would know the difference. All I need was to do would be come up with (1) two women's names - one exotic and one common, (2) an action that is very normal or sweet and tender (3) an action that is both disturbing and repulsive about either religion, drugs, sex or bodily functions and (4) throw in a four letter word. It would go something like this:

"Vanda was a fat girl, but she knew how to dance. Melinda was a sexy blond with a bad habit of $#!++ing her pants. Hhhuuummmm-hum-hum-hum-hum-HUM-hum-hum"

At the end of each verse, the lead vocalist/narrator would hum (Yes, I said hum) along with the music. To make things worse, there was another song about that time that sounded like it was being played on a child's keyboard that consisted mainly of the words "Da da da" repeated over and over.

If you MUST hear this song, you can find a homemade video of the song on You Tube. It probably isn't safe for work because it is not PC, not family friendly and down right annoying.

WHY DID I GET INTO RADIO?

I complain about the radio industry, which I am appear of. People have said, "If you don't like it, why did you take a job in the radio industry?"

As many of you know, the radio industry crossed over to the DARK SIDE!

I found this video of a hit song from 1974 that celebrates the reason I got into radio. There is no talk about President Obama's birth certificate, immigration, "Fair Tax," socialism, Reagan fetishism or "the defending the Constitution." Just the important stuff.

An opinion, like this one, is why I'm considered the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

KATY PERRY GET REVENGE ON GUY WHO IGNORED HER IS SCHOOL

This is one of those stories I love. Yahoo Music reports that super hot babe and pop music star Katy Perry was performing a concert at the high school she attended. She saw a jock boy, who wouldn't give her the time of day in high school, in the audience. She pointed him out in front of everyone at the concert and let the jerk have it.

Pointing out into the audience, she identified one specific member of the crowd and asked, "Is that Shane Lopes? You were the most popular kid in my class, but you never wanted to date me, it was always Amanda Wayne." As the crowd laughed and cheered, she adopted a bit of swagger and added, "Oh yeah, you really chose right, honey. What's up now, playa?" Becoming an international, Grammy-nominated pop star evidently does wonderful things for your self-confidence.

TAKE THAT, JOCK BOY!!!

Apparently, this story upset some other little jock boy-douche bags. If you look at the comments, you will see some ugly hatred toward the incredible looking Miss Perry.

Among them is a comment from a brain damaged idiot calling himself "independent." Besides being too stupid to capitalize his name, he shows how un-hip and stupid he is by saying, "What a piece of garbage. still stuck in high school? Tells a lot about her just from this story. She must not be that great since I have never even heard of her until now." Excuse me, "independent," if you would stop listening to crap like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, you would know who Katy Perry is. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS A PIECE OF GARBAGE, YOU TALK-RADIO LISTENING SCUMBAG!!!

And then there is a scumbag called "See See," who says: "What a child... Move on... It does not prove anything, only that you are still bitter."

I should have known "See See" would have something hateful, negative and malicious to say, because they used this "weird baby" avatar. Anytime you see that, the post is usually by a person who is hateful, racist, right-wing, douche bag, asshole. I really wish the government would do something about these people, like have them arrested and tortured to death.

Loyal readers know that I frequently like to embarrass Eunice Moneymaker of Lebanon, MO for not going out with me in junior high and high school. Contrary to what a bunch of nitwits posting on Yahoo would say, I have every right to make fun of her now. Like Katy Perry, I'm famous.

I WANT TO HOLD A "HEY LIGHTEN UP AMERICA" RALLY IN BRANSON

I WANT TO RESTORE HUMOR AND FUN IN AMERICA! THAT IS MY GOAL!

I would like to hold a "HEY LIGHTEN UP AMERICA" rally, because for the past nine years there has been under siege by a mentality that we have to take everything serious, live in fear and suspicion of others and hate anything fun and entertaining. I blame this on the talk radio crowd and Faux News. We need to restore a sense of fun and humor badly. When people get up and arms on You Tube over that old Peter Pan Peanut Butter commercial with Laugh-In's Alan Sues in it, you know that this country has a bad crisis in the humor and fun department.

I would be the host and MC of the event. For a co-host, I need a wild, hot babe like Paris Hilton, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Milly Cyrus or Lindsay Lohan. A special guest will be Steven "Hit the Slide and Ride" Slater. The perfect location for this would be Branson, MO on 76 Country Boulevard. We also need a cross section of music both alternative and hip hop. NO COUNTRY MUSIC WILL BE ALLOWED. BOOZE AND OTHER SUBSTANCES WILL BE PROVIDED. CLOTHING WILL BE OPTIONAL.
Security will be provided by the "New" Black Panthers.
Everyone will receive a free pink toothbrush to ward off evil spirits (and out of work Canadian talk radio show host).

I'm sure this will draw ten times the crowd that Glenn Beck's stupid rally did. And when I he sees I drew a bigger crowd than him and Silly Sarah of Moosealoony, they will both cry "Boo-hoo-hoo-hoo."

Of course, an opinion, like this one, is what makes me the Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!

WASN'T MY GENERATION SUPPOSED TO CHANGE RADIO FOR THE BETTER?

Once again, I've decided to travel back into time to my SMSU days. I've been reflective lately on all the hope and promise of those days that has been largely stomped on the repressive Ozarks culture.

Let's look at one facet of my media career, which is radio. As a media major, I studied newspaper, radio and television. I had a particular interest in radio. Part of this came from the simple fact that i was always interested in improving the local radio scene. I used to do some DXing late at night as a kid and I felt that many of the local radio station needed to be more like the major market stations. It was my destiny to try to change things around here, especially KWLT FM 92 and KJEL in Lebanon.

Another thing that energized my interest in radio, was an article in Rolling Stone about college radio was becoming a big influence in the music world. Rolling Stone and Billboard both had college rock charts. According to Rolling Stone, the young people in college radio were going to revitalize radio with their creativity and free-form programming.

The only radio stations in Springfield offering internships were KTTS, KTXR and KSMU. Rumor has it one of the rock stations in town stopped offering internships because they didn't want any college kids telling people about rampant cocaine use by the staff. I took an internship at KSMU, because they allowed students to program their own music on the Midnight Snack show. I used to listen to the Midnight Snack in Lebanon. It was there that I first fell in love with the Sex Pistols, Ramones and the various paisley underground bands.

College radio eventually beat mainstream radio to probably the greatest band of the 90's, Nirvana. Springfield even had a radio station playing college rock, Z105 the Planet. Yes, it looked liked my generation (now dubbed Generation X by the press). SO WHAT HAPPENED???

Several factors played into our lack of power in 2010. The major explanation goes back to the Telecom Act of 1996, which opened the door for the large radio corporations like Clear Channel, Cumulus, Journal and Citadel. Here is hoping the FCC reverses all this consolidation soon. With consolidation, most creative program directors lost their power in favor on PD for the whole country. Sadly, most of these companies adapted the attitude that "only country and talk are profitable in the post 9-11 society" and many alternative station were changed to something else. So then, why has radio lost so much money and listeners in the past few years? Could it be you are driving away listeners with that talk and country garbage?

A major problem that isn't talked about is the animosity and resistance faced us Generation X-college-radio-trained-talent from an element of white-conservative-Baby Boomers, who were in management, not just in radio but other media. These balding, fat middle aged guys wanted to keep us out of the industry. They also did like the changes we wanted to make. A Rolling Stone article once gave a name to a name to a notorious alternative rock radio destroyer, Randy Michaels of Jacor. I should also point out that Jacor (later engulfed by Clear Channel) owned the Premier Radio, which produces such garbage as Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura and Delilah. Do you see a pattern here?

However, there is a nostalgia for the college radio era and it's music. A friend of mine works at a book and music store. He has noticed people in their 40s buying the "college rock" of the 80s and 90s. Two blogs, Spinning Indie and Slicing Eyeballs, discuss both old and new college rock.

There is hope that there could be a turn around in the radio industry and us Generation X college radio slackers will save the industry from the suit wearing, Rush lovers in the big corporations. We are radio's only hope.

Of course, opinions like these are why I'm considered Super Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

LONG LIVE ROCK & ROLL- RONNIE JAMES DIO DEAD 67

Here is the obit from CNN on the Rainbow, Black Sabbath and solo heavy metal vocalist. Dio also host several syndicated radio shows during the heavy metal boom of the 80s. My favorite Rainbow song is "Long Live Rock & Roll." Long Live Ronnie James Dio.

HAPPY 45th BIRTHDAY - BOSS RADIO 93 KHJ!

On May 5th, 1965, radio history was created with the birth of the greatest Top 40, NO, make that GREATEST RADIO STATION EVER! Ron Jacobs was part of the KHJ crew. On his blog, he has a memory from another member of the KHJ staff, Bill Mouzis. You can read it here.

Reading this makes me wonder (again) why radio people in this area hate the mention of KHJ.

As Bill Drake would say, "THE HITS JUST KEEP COMING!"

WHY DO I GET FLAK FOR DOING THE PSYCHEDELIC LIMITS ON KSMU?

I've mentioned before that my first job in radio was at KSMU-FM. I was one of several young media students who worked overnights as part of a show called the Midnight Snack. We would take in our own got college credit and, most importantly, we got radio experience. Once a month, I would play only psychedelic music on my show with some comedy from the likes of Firesign Theater, George Carlin and Cheech & Chong. I called this segment, The Psychedelic Limits. I was inspired to do this show from a syndicated radio show called Flashback (which didn't air in Springfield at the time - it later ran on KWTO-FM and KKLH), the All-Night Coffee House on KCFX, and Beaker Street. Many of my radio instructors at MSU (then SMSU) told me to mention the show in my resume because "it would show potential employers that I was creative."

For some reason, I have gotten flak from several people in the radio industry (and radio fans too) for doing this show. I was told by one former boss that the show was "unethical" and the "equivalent of pushing drugs on the radio at the tax payers expense." This was from someone who thinks great radio is a program called "Bids for Bargains."

At my current job, my college work gets the same kind of disrespect. I was told the music I played on that show was "hippie" music and "hippies have ruined America." That's funny, I thought it was the Republicans. Oddly enough, "hippies" are still a worry for some of my co-workers. They tend prefer the company of redneck women who talk about blowing people's heads off or old men who wish we would bring segregation back.

I would just like to go on record for saying that the lyrics of most psychedelic songs are more creative and meaningful than most of the country songs that Ozarkers and local radio management find so wonderful (Yes, Desdinova has been forced to play country music in his radio career). I'll give you the lyrics to four songs I played on my KSMU psychedelic show: "Incense and Peppermint" by Strawberry Alarm Clock, "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I" by the Yardbirds, "Requiem For the Masses" by the Association and "Planet Caravan" by Black Sabbath. Now compare these to the silly lyrics of "Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown Band, a favorite of many Ozarkers. I think you can see my point (BTW: Do you hear the line "A yardstick for lunatics with one point of view" and immediately think of Glenn Beck?). Some feel this music is destructive. That is dumb, especially considering that the same people think good radio is having a host wishing for the Springfield school board to die in a car accident or hoping that someone burns down MSU.

Much of this bile from the local industry comes from the fact that this was on KSMU, which is not only public radio, but owned by a state university. I was supposedly "wasting the taxpayers dollars." They could have been spent on something like a war. That would be a much better use of taxpayer money than my training for the radio industry. Oh yeah, I forgot, I should have gotten a MBA.

I just think I'm getting too much heat over something that could have helped the industry. Of course, opinions like this are why I'm considered the Super-Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Enjoy a little psychedelia from the Pretty Things.

SEX PISTOLS MANAGER MALCOLM McLAREN DEAD AT 64

It was one of my goals when I got into the radio industry was to get more of the Sex Pistols music on local radio. With the boom in alternative stations in the 90's, there was at least some recognition by the industry of this groundbreaking group. Sadly, the radio industry felt country music and right-wing talk radio would make more money. WRONG!!! That is one of the reasons radio is in the financial pickle it is today.

The man who guided the Sex Pistols flash fire career, along with Bow Wow Wow and the New York Dolls, Malcolm McLaren has died of cancer in Switzerland at age 64. Here is the BBC story.

I THOUGHT THAT SONG WAS ABOUT ME

One of the great mysteries of rock and roll lyrics may be solved. Carly Simon is hinting that a guy named David was the inspiration for "You're So Vain." The Toronto Star has the story.

Rumor has it that it is record mogul David Geffen. I thought it was David Coulier of Full House. Maybe I'm thinking of another song.

I always thought "You're So Vain" was about me. Of course, opinions like this are why I'm the Super-Villain of the Ozarks!!! Mwu-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

WHY DO LOCAL BROADCASTERS HATE BOSS RADIO?

The death of Gene Chenault brings to close the story of "Boss Radio," the dynamic sound that revitalized Top 40 radio in the 60's. The radio stations in the Drake-Chenault chain had a style that was imitated in many parts of the country except the Ozarks. When you bring up the "Boss Radio" to many people in the radio industry in southwest Missouri, you get an attitude of disdain. Many complain that Boss Radio was too "West Coast" or "big city."

I recently out lined how I would create a Top 40 station over on the Missouri Radio Message Board. I mentioned early on in my post that I was taking cues from the "Bill Drake playbook."

Here is my outline:

"Music: T-40 (Not a restricted CHR) with a good dose of Alternative and Hip Hop/R&B. Also I throw in a select group of oldies/classic rock. This last group would be rotated quite a bit. I would use an automation system, but the DJs would be live. I would also demand that music logs were checked so that the same song doesn't play at the same time, day after day, week after week. Most of all I want to keep the music upbeat and diverse. THAT MEANS DON'T JUST PLAY WHITE ARTIST.

DJ should be up beat, exciting and fun. They should also be profesional radio talent. No real estate guys, plumbers or auctioneers. I was also require them to be on MORE than three breaks an hour. The DJs must give the name of the song and artist along with time and temperature. Also the DJs will give any pertinent info they might want about what is going on in the community. Listen to the KHJ and CKLW aircheck here and here and here.

I will find a morning guy who is equivalent David Letterman or Conan O'Brien and let them have fun. Then find them a good sidekick, male or female. I have them make fun of local talk radio host. My morning show host will put a "kick me sign" on any talk host "standing up for what's right."

Imaging: At no point will you hear a liner or ID that sounds like static or the station has went off the air. There will be jingle like the ones heard here on You Tube.

News & Weather: I would have a two minute newscast at the quarters (15 after and 15 til) and weather four times an hour. The news department would be separate. The DJs would not be forced to do the news. Also none that "we don't do cover that." If it is news we would cover it. I don't believe in "pick & choose" news. Of the Drake stations, CKLW had the biggest news department under Byron McGregor (although the style at times boardered on being in poor taste). NO WALL TO WALL COVERAGE UNLESS IT IS A TORNADO. Even then the DJS can give warnings and info with out turning into "War of the Worlds." I also believe that during an ice storm people would appreciate some music as apposed to phone calls from idiots complaining about the electricity being out.

Sports: DJs can give scores and there my be an update once an hour on Saturdays. No play by play, but the station would have a "tailgate party" at every game with free food and maybe free swag. Have someone there to call in a score update to the Djs.

Public service: I believe that public service is the key name branding and public trust. I'm against this "If they charge to get in, we are not giving them free airtime." Try to be involved in every charity event you can.

Commercials: I would put a limit on commercials per hour and spread them out through out the hour. No more "30 minutes of non stop music" followed by 8 minutes of commercials. Once the slots were filled on the prime time, have the sales people tell advertisers they can be on a waiting list or sell them ROS. If there are barter/makegoods, put them in the overnight or light hours. The local advertisers or national ad buys are more important than that idiot that says "Is yor kid abnaxshush?" or "Men, Do you have trouble urinating?" spots. Most of all I would keep the sales people on a short leash. There job is sales - THAT IS IT. Make sure they find advertisers that will be right for the format. The T-40 audience goes to bars, restaurants, stores, banks, hair salons etc. They don't buy drywall drills or backhoe equipment.

Promotions: There will be surveys like the ones found on this KHJ site. Billboards with the DJs picture on it. T-shirts with the station on it. Window stickers with the calls. The station would do a promotion where a person wearing the station Ts or has window sticker in their car gets a prize."

Sounds like a good idea doesn't it? They didn't thinks so. I only received one positive comment about it. I was chided for trying to program for kids and that it wouldn't make money. Many area broadcasters are infatuated with the work of Missouri's Jerald Shepherd because he "made lots of money." His was bare bones and bland with an over abundance of bland, dry-read ads. No jingles or commercials with background music or humor. Of course, all that is important to the Ozarkers and the talk radio freaks is money. No fun or joy allowed in the Ozarks. It will upset those listeners over 70.

That is why the radio industry is doomed in this part of the country. Soon the only people listening will be country music loving rednecks and the money-grubbing, hate-driven talk radio freaks.
